Wait? Eurovision is based on singing quality? Not on politics?

If the UK do well then it’s a well respected singing competition. It the UK fails badly then it’s all political.

It’s always been political. The Uk haven’t done well since Katrina and the Waves, and even then it was political.

There's no way the UK song was the worst out of that lot, and the only one deserving of zero points from both the juries AND the public. Of course it's political.

UK’s last decent pop song did well - all others failed as they were awful. Coincidence? Who cares, its not at all important and apparently some people think it’s fun to watch. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Name that last ‘decent’ pop song and it’s year.

I’m not trying to make any point. I’m a little well refreshed following my first visit to indoor hospitality.

Thank you. Yes there is an obvious element of bloc voting but the UK generally gets poor results because the songs are awful and it puts in a tiny fraction of the effort that other countries like Sweden and Italy do. Their national selection finals are huge events and we don’t even have one because the song is chosen in secret by some BBC ‘experts’. Still feel bad for our guy, 0 was harsh.

Well, no, the song certainly didn’t hit any highs. But it sure as sh it wasn’t a Nil. We did used to have big events to choose our song. Wogan hosted them, but it became clear the public couldn’t be trusted and those songs did worse than the juried ones. No one considered that Europe might be starting to not like us very much.

93 points behind Israel on 00:34 - May 23 with 2266 views | Stenvict | I think what makes a big difference is, across Europe they will all be aware of each others songs. We, over here, have never heard of the majority of songs or artists before because we get so much of the mainstream stuff. When I lived abroad, there were numerous songs on the radio from other European countries. If Ed was up there, we'd walk the competition.

1997 wasn't it where avidly Pro-European Tony Blair was elected? Brexit and Boris in particular will go down like a lead balloon with Europe sadly There maybe some vaccine bitterness also [Post edited 23 May 2021 0:49]

There's an element of this for sure, the last decent song we put in where we even remotely tried was Blue and I imagine that's our highest finish since 1997? A Simon Cowell run contest show which leads up to a selection is perhaps the way to go unless we are just allowed to enter someone who's big now Italy's song had been tremendously popular on YouTube leading up to this, I didn't think it was as good as Finland's but it obviously resonated with a lot of the European public

Its just like the 70s and 80s when some old cronies at the bbc tried to tell us what bland crap we were supposed to listen too via Top of the Pops. Fortunately most people had a brain and found ways to listen to what they deemed relevant. The UK picks bland crud every year. This years song won't be remembered by tomorrow and the singer was poor.

His entry in 2019 was stronger sadly We really need to enter a known star, if San Marino can get away with Flo Rida, surely it can be done?

2011 - Blue (11th) 2012 - Englebert Humperdink (25th) 2013 - Bonnie Tyler (19th) Admittedly, its a song writing contest and we haven't tried Ed Sheehan yet. But we haven't had a top ten finish since 2009.

Duncan James, who was in Blue from 2000-2005, had a very attractive girlfriend who used to work behind the bar of my local pub.

2000-2005? He's still in Blue. They never split up. Although they haven't had a record deal since 2016, they're still touring.

This country continues to have some of the biggest stars in the world and is known for its songwriters etc. However, why should any of them risk their credibility in a cheesy contest such as this. And yes, there is bloc voting, an example from last night that I actually took in was Cyprus voting for Greece. It happens too often just for it to be down to the quality of the song / performance.
