It's also crazy that such blame is attributed to the individual. A football match is a sequence of events and many mistakes really. I wonder if Muller's miss will be remembered in 25 years time, or had he scored, I wonder if Sterling's loose pass that started that move would've been.
Very harsh, and Southgate (or any other penalty missers) have absolutely nothing to apologise for. That's football, it takes balls to step up and take one. |  |

Because England "fans" as a collective are never happier than when they're miserable. We love to be self-deprecating and pick at old wounds. You only need to look at all the criticism of our performances so far in this tournament. It's insane and is undoubtedly one of the major contributing factors for why we have underachieved down the years.
Southgate seems to have fixed that mentality within the team, which is why we are now seeing a more professional approach and a little self-belief. Long may it continue. [Post edited 1 Jul 2021 9:22]

I think this shows why Shearer was a great captain really. He may seem a bit boring on MOTD at times, but if you were sh**ting yourself before a big game, I recon an arm round the shoulder from Alan was the perfect tonic. |  |

I always thought it was hugely unfair on Southgate at the time. I remember watching Ince literally turn his back on it all despite being one of the few players left on the pitch who should know what its like to at least try and score. |  | | |
