Germany appreciation thread 15:36 - Jul 2 with 6552 viewsBlueastheycome

There were some frankly disgusting, vile and xenophobic tweets/whatsapp messages during and after the game on Tuesday night.

In light of this, I propose we get a thread going showing some appreciation for our German neighbours.

I'll start-

The beer: They sell them in litre tankards in the Aldstadt of Dusseldorf. The general cost of beer is reasonably low too.

The people: In my experience of my trips to Germany, I have found Germans to be exceedingly warm and friendly.

The football: Obscenely cheap tickets by English football standards and smoking, drinking and standing during the games itself is a brilliantly unique and fantastic experience (especially to those aged 30 and under like my good self). The fan ownership of clubs and the commitment and culture of not selling its soul also makes German football pretty special. There have been some absolutely cracking German national teams in the past too.

Fortuna Dusseldorf: a special and crazy bunch of lads/lasses that have instigated off their own back a special relationship between us and them.

Kraftwerk: Might not be to everyone's tastes but I like them. Would love to see them live. Special mention to Rammstein too.

Oktoberfest: Looks fun, but never been. I hope that changes after the pandemic.

Overall, its a cracking place and gets a 10/10 from me.

On an unrelated side note, I am trying to learn German through an app, and after a strong start of learning basic words, I am faltering. This is made especially harder by the German language having both masculine and feminine words for the same thing.

Best set of fans going. Had some awesome days at major tournaments with the Germans. Wonderful people

I'm lille for the last one we spent a whole day heavily outnumbered by them singing songs back and forth in good humour. As soon as the game started they said we're all England now so we'll keepbykur beers topped up while you enjoy the game on tv. They duly did pay for all of our beers and cheered us on. Sadly after the game about 10 English d*ckheads turned up and decided to try and fight them. About 20 of is stood in front and said we are backing the Germans all day and duly told the England fans to f*** off

The Black Forest is something to behold. I've never seen such starry skies at night, fireflies dotting about, it's a beautiful place.

The holocaust memorial in Berlin is staggering, and the museum beneath it is deeply moving and fascinating. I'd recommend anyone to visit. If you're staying in Berlin then Sachsenhausen concentration camp is close enough for a day trip. It's a chilling but fascinating place.

Berlin itself is an amazing city, filled with history and culture. I've loved my times exploring and finding the different areas. Kreuzberg was an incredibly cool place, filled with musicians, artists and great food. The nightlife in Berlin is insane, although it is hard to get into some clubs if you're English.

Beer halls in Munich are amazing, if you go just make sure you line your stomach and get there relatively early. They were constantly rammed every time I have ever been but the steins of outstanding German beer and oversized pretzels make you quickly forget.

Hamburg is stunning to walk around during the day, equally stunning to stumble around at night. They know how to put on a party.

Been to Germany a few times over the years. Lovely country, great people by and large.

The only downer I have is German food. It’s really not the best. On out golf tours out there, the Germans always served their traditional ‘speciality for our English guests’. Bavarian Weiss Sausage. Served with a bagel style bread and chutney it is up there with the most disgusting things I’ve ever eaten. And as guests, we felt obliged to eat it, smile and say thank you. If you get the chance to try it, avoid if you can!

there's some grim stuff on the meat side (and east germans have a weird pike dish for a christmas "treat"), but there's some great seafood, especially on the baltic coast and some fabulous cakes (especially pflaumenkuchen).

Worse. Much worse. Basically they are pork (meat, fat, connecting tissue you name it) with a few herbs, boiled. They have to be eaten they day they are made by lunchtime or they go off. How you’d tell the difference I’ve no idea.

On one occasion, they served up every type of sausage they have in colour order buffet style. Dozens of them. White through to basically black pudding. We were invited to sample a piece of them all, so we did. Some were very nice, some not, but it was an interesting experience. Great hosts.

There is a reason there are plenty of Italian French and Argie restaurants in Germany. The Germans prefer them. Of course, British food isn’t the best either. It’s a north European thing I suppose. Southern European food is much nicer, with the exception of Greek, which isn’t the best.

this is true; on the downside you can be travelling at 100mph in the fast lane and a black audi or merc will appear on your tail out of nowhere just waiting (politely) for you to get out of their way!

another great thing is that lorries aren't allowed to overtake on large stretches, which they should definitely bring in over here!

Most of them have probably only been to Benidorm.
