Someone was always going to pay a lot for him on the back of one exceptional season, he'll do alright for Wigan I think but quite glad it's not us.

Not sure we were ever in for him. Think that one - like a number of others - was just agent talk.

readytogo.net is generally offended by his departure to a 'smaller' club, but on the whole not very complimentary about his overall ability, apart from his finishing. Not what we needed I think.

I was always skeptical, he doesn't fit the Gamechanger model.

Give some of the figures rumoured around this deal and the reaction of the Sunderland fans, pretty glad we swerved this one. Edwards pumping crosses into the box is not the same as Aiden Mcgeady. Always got the impression he was a fairly limited player in the form of his life.

Watch him bag another 25+ goals now.

No, didn't seem that serious.

Telling it's still in League 1 too, even if Wigan are spending a lot.

well I think its obvious what's happened here isnt it?

We were front runners to sign his, story gets published in the local press, linked to here and someone from Wigan who had no prior knowledge of who Woke is saw it, thought 'Oh he might be good' and has hijaked the move here

Think I'd still put our transfer aspirations ahead of theirs. I doubt they'd be eyeing a Celina type signing, for example. There will be some crossover, of course, but not sure they're comparable with us.

Apparently, they're paying him £10k a week as well. How does a side who, until fairly recently, were in financial peril get to pay anyone a wage like that for League One? How can Wigan, a fairly small-supported club, reconcile that with their average attendances?

They're bending the rules I'd assume. But if we're in for Celina potentially, even though we get bigger crowds, you'd assume we are somewhat too?

If you have an owner that's willing to inject equity rather than debt, there effectively aren't any rules.

They've been taken over, but agree their turnover won't allow them a wage bill which would be able to compete with ours.

Clubs' adherence to the rules is tested as the season progresses so it will become known if anyone is flouting them.

It's then at that point, the new owner of wigan realises that despite spending a fortune on wages, their attendances still remain at 5 per game and he suddenly pulls the plug.

This is a really important point - hundreds of posts on here are about transfer possibilities and impossibilities and many make reference to SCMP, sometimes by name, sometimes not.

According to this website (below), an owner can make a donation (rather than a loan) to a club and that will count as turnover. It is a completely different test than is applied in the FFP rules in higher leagues. Is it possible to get this cleared up once and for all, Phil? I'm happy to stand corrected, not least because the EFL website seems to want to make it as hard as possible to see the wording of the actual rules...
