Great Town fans turn out

Some great first half performances from Piggot, Dobra, Harper especially

It was like no pressure season game I’d seen, loads of energy and running, and bite with Judge doing a red card worthy challenge on Dobra, and then Chambo squaring up to him.

But Col U wanted it more, Sears and especially Judge showed real fight and endeavour. And Holy was comical buffoon who gifted goals - shocking.

They edged the game. Deserved the win.

The difference being we had the better players which is a great step forward and that gave us the draw, with Burns wunder free kick.

It was still a friendly with us using a lot of youth and switching loads of players,,, for me too many in a penultimate pre season friendly.

BUT the one concern I have is Col U showed the better shape and system for 70% of the game and we looked ragged.

I would hope with the season close we would know the plan. But to be fair to Cook and the team the amount of squad in flux is crazy and we swapped the team tonight.

I don’t want to leave the Morecombe game still puzzling on our shape and hunger for the second ball.

Great to be with the fans again, great to see Burns, Piggot, Harper. And you know “it’s only a pre season friendly”

Hard to gauge as well as I’m sure for chambers judge and the rest it would have been like a cup
Final To them to try and show cook up.

The players are well aware of the plan
They go through it every day

This is what happens when you go into a friendly expecting us to want it just like col U.

Indeed. The defence was the issue and we will have Hladky, Vincent-Young, Edmondson and possibly Nsiala in there for the league. Not sure if we have someone ahead of Penney for left back at the moment do we? There is an issue that we need better strength in depth from some of those back 5 but Burns can cover at RB too. Probably need a better number 2 than Holy but he won't play that poorly all the time if called on.

It definitely felt like the col u players were really up for it and not treating it like a pre season.

So hard to gauge as you say.

BUT, Col U looked better organised in terms of a system, as well as being losing the second ball.

Hoping it’s because we played Ndaba and Donacien and a youngster instead of Evans. And a shed load of changes. And huge flux in the squad.

Rather than a continuation of the bat sh!t crazy systems and formations at the end of last term.

3 ways to win a game:

- want it more than the opposition
- have better players than the opposition
- have a better system than the opposition

Think we were behind on 2 of those tonight

Not sure Ndaba and Wolfenden were the issue, I thought they played well, it was mess of the middle two in front and a clown performance from Holy

Not sure we learnt much we didn’t already know tbh.

A few of those players that have moved on are clearly a little bitter still, and I can sympathise with that in some cases. Judge was one of our best players in the 2nd half of last season, he’s a good signing for them and we shouldn’t be surprised to see him play well. Holy’s a terrible goalkeeper, that’s been evident since he arrived and I would imagine he’s well behind Hladky in the pecking order. Dobra has potential and a lot of ability, which he demonstrated.

A handful of those who played tonight will start <3 league games this season I would wager. It’s a friendly, it’s a glorified training session that counts for absolutely nothing at the end of the day. It’s good to get semi competitive action and minutes into them, but the result is barely newsworthy.

Well yeah. But why would we want it more. It's a friendly.

System. Jeffers even said we got out of it what we wanted in terms of shape.. you dont know what they were looking for.

I honestly dont know what you were expecting. You're almost on par with their commentator but the opposite.

No way Penney is more than a squad player.

Coulson will start ahead of him.

It was a game of two halves - our midfield and attack versus our defence.

Going forward, we looked bright, had pace and movement, created plenty of chances and scored three very good goals. We displayed quality lacking in so many matches last season. Honourable mention to Dobs who has surely secured a first team squad place this season, he could be a very important player for us this season, great to see.

In comparison, the starting back five largely looked poor. Holy had a pantomime game, some of the passing across the back was reminiscent of last season when the sensible option was to clear the lines. I though Nbada and Penney struggled in the first half and Col U got behind them at least three times.

While there was more end product than versus Palace on Saturday, we did not maintain our shape as well nor have the same intensity. Against a Col U team, some of whom had a point to prove. I thought Chambers and Judge had good games for them and they look like a decent team in League 2.

Taking the positives, most of the defence that started last night are unlikely to be regular starters in the League this season, Woolfenden possibly. A new left back, Edmundson, possibly another new CB and KVY will start in front of Vklady. That should make us much more solid.

Milwall should give us a better sense of where we are as this will more likely be indicative of our current first XI going into the season.

Well according to my Col U supporting mate we are in for a “lousy” season and no better than them. Hasn’t a clue what is going on at Ipswich but has reached that verdict. We’re stuffed then!

I went with a neutral and his thoughts on leaving the ground were that Col U deserved to win and were playing a far more effective system and showed the better interplay.

I think he missed the amount of player change, youth and B players used. And even with these factors when we went up a gear we caused real problems.

But we need Evans back and a clearer system

You’re back on that we lost our shape and intensity - it wasn’t really a pre-season game given how fired up Col U were. And in a way our players didn’t have as much skin in the game.

Don’t want us as ragged and losing the second ball in a league game this season.

You’re right a game of two halves, we were more composed and controlled first half Piggot and Harper superb. They also couldn’t get near Dobra, and he’ll be a super sub this year, just needs to work on the final product.

Agree with line up, I’d keep Wolfenden in, but a young pairing.

We need Evans playing, and a quality back-up. Can we not rehabilitate Downes?

There’s also point 4 - score more goals than the opposition

That ones a bit complex for people so thought I’d exclude
