Exactly this ^^^^^^ What better type of player to identify what makes a good defender/ defence than a half decent striker.

A good defender? Otherwise why do we not have a defender doing our attacking set pieces....

A whole decent striker maybe? I can’t believe that a forward really makes a good coach of defenders. Sitters - no I know Cook didn’t say he was defense coach, but he did say spthat he works on the defending of set plays. That’s at least half the job!

No, Jeffers was a good striker …my point is , a decent striker would understand the attributes required of a good defender/ defence , since he spent his whole career trying to outwit them. He’d also know what a bad defensive trait was… and would know how to exploit it.

This is one of those strange fan logic things which simply isn't true.

Surely he'd be better off critiquing a defender setting it up rather than setting it up himself then. Setting up for set pieces are no doubt a learned skill, and not something that previous playing experiences are going to have much effect so it's surely not a massive deal - but a huge leap to suggest because he was a striker he'll know how to set a defensive set piece up.

Frances Jeffers - defensive coach! on 17:51 - Nov 9 with 1386 views | Darth_Koont | Defensive set pieces. Which makes reasonable sense as defensive set pieces are all about responding to what the opposition attackers are going to do at a set piece.

No. He coaches the defenders on set pieces. But I'm sure you agree that you can be completely behind the Cook project and still be concerned that there isn't a defender among his coaching staff, at a time when defending seems to be the weakest part of our game at the moment.

It's interesting in regards to the defensive errors. PC was correct in that our overall defensive shape is fine. We cope as well as some of the other tightest defensive teams in the league... but individual errors still hurt us. Would a defensive coach stop these individual errors?

Sutton and Dublin, the players not places, made decent strikers as they had played their early days as defenders. Playing and coaching are totally different things. To my limited knowledge on the subject, Jeffers didn't play as a defender, but that shouldn't mean that he didn't do a coaching badge based on defending. Would make more sense for a defender to teach defending, but don't see why anybody qualified can't teach anything.
Frances Jeffers - defensive coach! on 18:21 - Nov 9 with 1285 views | wkj | He's not a defensive coach, he coaches the defenders on set pieces. He's not the assistant manager, he's the assistant to the manager

I'm pretty sure that if you gave Terry Butcher or Russell Osman a few sessions with Toto he would become a much better defender and less error prone. He has all the attributes needed to be a top class central defender but lapses in concentration and the occasional lapse in judgement costs us. A good defensive coach could with with him on this.

Always surprised me he's never been our defensive coach TB.. pretty much the role for him isn't it. Whilst we're there. Get Burley in for fullbacks too :)

The best 2 managers in Premier League history had very average playing careers. If you train as a defensive coach, you are more qualified than somebody unqualified. I am amazed TB, RO, GB & MM aren't involved, but if they are not a qualified defensive coach, then.....
Frances Jeffers - defensive coach! on 20:17 - Nov 9 with 1069 views | oneoffposter | No idea about Jeffers as a coach but don’t think it’s a case of he should be coaching the attackers I’ve heard on various podcasts ex Arsenal players talk about how George Graham was the best defensive coach going and the stats backed that up, I’m sure they still hold a goals conceded record for the top flight Graham was a flamboyant attacking midfielder if I’m not mistaken The idea that you need to a defender to coach the defence is nonsense When burley was most successful with us his staff were him Mowbray and Roberts 3 defenders Somehow we managed to score lots of goals despite the lack of an attacking coach, incredible
