Yes I get we need to pay wages, but what does our wage bill look like vs others in League One?

I’m guessing a lot higher than most other teams in L1.

We probably spent £1.3m on Burgess and Fraser alone so no idea where you have plucked that figure from.

Where is that info from?

Another aspect might be that transfer fees are paid over 2-3 years, so the £1.3m might just be initial payments.

Weren't we paying the players we got rid of?

I would be very interested in seeing the numbers, but of course we never will. As you say, we didn't just sell a couple for decent fees but we also moved on a heck of a lot of high earners. I don't doubt at all that our wage bill is higher now though, Chaplin, Morsy, Celina etc will be on a decent whack.

Thinking very quickly about this so may well be wrong - our loan signings are predominantly from clubs higher up in the food chain - so logically they’ll all be on far better money than the average L1 player.

Also our permanent transfers are also predominantly from ‘bigger’ clubs in terms of league positions. Even our ‘free’ signings wouldn’t have been cheap in terms of wages spent as they all had decent reputations.

It’s probably not Cooks fault that we are spending more on wages as I doubt if he negotiates contracts/ transfer fees. But it all points towards the fact that we are underperforming.

Cook out.

Well yes but lets not pretend to be stupid here.

If anyone thinks Drinan and Sears were earning the same as Celina and Chaplin then they need their heads testing.

Your clueless

Hladky alone was close to seven figures as was Burns.

Harper was around 500k
Burgess 750k
Chaplin 500-750k
Edmundson 750k

All that’s without the huge (by comparison to the rest of the league) wages we are paying across the board.

We probably have the highest paid manager too I would imagine.

Of course not but we got rid of the thick enf of 30 players and recruited only 19....

Of course the budget is higher this year, it just makes up for all the years of underinvestment

Oh yeah, we're certainly underperforming.

I would be amazed if the wage bill isn't higher now vs. last season, but I would love to see by how much. I heard we have a player on £15k p/w which is unthinkable for most at this level. Chambers, Skuse, Judge etc weren't cheap but I imagine their replacements are on a fair amount more.

What wouldn't surprise me is if the transfer fees broadly net off. The money for Downes and Dozzell, I wouldn't be surprised if that's all we've spent. A lot of those we brought in were on frees (Evans, Aluko, Edwards, Carroll, Penney, Pigott). Who have we paid for? Chaplin, Edmundson, Morsy, Fraser, Burns, Harper, Burgess, Hladky. Got to be a couple of mil there. Plus loan fees.

All we can hope is the new owners don’t get a touch of the Marcus Evans and think no way are we going to keep investing at these levels!! Remember ME got his fingers burned by Keane and never invested in the same way again. Arguably Gamechanger have invested more and had an even worse return. I would be fuming to see my money spunked in the way we have spent it.

Our wage budget was one of the the highest in League one for the last 2 years. You've just stated the budget is higher this year therefore answering my original point that the investment has gone into wages.

And thats ignoring the incorrect transfer figures stated in the OP.

No but I am placing myself in the shoes of the people responsible for allocating those funds accordingly. I wouldn’t be impressed at all, in fact the fact we have clearly regressed as things stand (against where we were at the same point last season) is astonishing and should have almost been impossible to “achieve”

That pension fund is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I very much doubt if some firefighters pension is at risk because of us.

Pigott cost £1m didn't he?
Burgess was £750k according to Andy Holt
Then you've got Harper, Edwards, Fraser, Hldaky all costing fees?

£1.3m can't be accurate
