Johnson’s get out of jail free card 08:14 - Jan 13 with 1664 views | ElderGrizzly | The inquiry is anything but independent: From an MP this morning: This is the problem with the ‘independent’ inquiry by Sue Gray “The prime minister himself gets to decide if he needs to be investigated under the ministerial code. No one else can make that decision. He can veto Sue’s recommendations”
Johnson’s get out of jail free card on 08:23 - Jan 13 with 1095 views | bluelagos | Watching Brandon Lewis this morning refuse to answer questions like "If Johnson broke the rules should be resign" makes me suspect they will try and brazen it out. Of course the longer this drags on the more damage it does to the government. And if it drags on for weeks/months and if his successor comes from within the current govt. then they too get tarred with the same brush. Part of a government that is without integrity and that chooses to stand and offer support to a charlatan like Johnson.

Certainly Ministers are towing the line and saying they won’t answer ‘hypothetical’ questions. Whixh is absurd in itself. They just all end up looking as slippery as Johnson. Was saying yesterday, the very subtle pressure on Sue Gray has started as well from Tory MPs in interviews yesterday afternoon across all news networks Saying she is a woman of great integrity, that she will come to the ‘right answer’. It’s subtle, but the pressure is being ramped up

If they think that should Sue Grey conclude that technically no rules were broken then this will all blow over they are very much mistaken. In fact I suspect it'll just add to the sense of outrage.

It depends how much of it we see. If Johnson can remove aspects of it before publication then they may think it is a way. Of course, it will get leaked and make things even worse, but you can see them trying it. Like Trump with the Mueller report and how they spun that

Of course he doesn't. He makes the rules for the little people, he shouldn't be expected to follow them. This is what happens when you put pure white privilege in positions of power. The more I think about his apology the angrier I am. The whole nonsense about what people "perceived" that is now being trotted out by his minions today as well is gaslighting on a national scale. It's basically saying people are upset because they are seeing something that's not really there, that we just didn't really understand the rules. It's a c**t move of the highest order. F**k Johnson, f**k this morally bankrupt government, and f**k anyone still blinkered enough to support this shambles.

I liked this from Chris Bryant With the context that the PM had 36 hours to come up with this excuse with a team of advisers. And Bryant pulls it apart in 5 mins [Post edited 13 Jan 2022 9:04]

How can she possibly rule that no rules were broken? 100 people invited, 30 people turned up with or without alcohol. Those are presumably facts as it hasn't been corrected or denied. He's admitted to being there. Not sure what else is relevant really. Maybe some of the 30 that presumably will get a small legal slap may say that he was there for longer than 25 minutes. But Sue Grey can't conclude no rules were broken.

That's what I couldn't understand about his defence yesterday. "Yeah I was there, but let's wait for the findings of the investigation to see if I actually was or not" Edit: OK that's not the only weird thing about the defence. If he can''t tell the difference between a party and a work meeting, that says a great deal about the way he has been "running" the country. [Post edited 13 Jan 2022 9:09]

Even IF he gets off on a technicality (Can't see it, he's bang to rights) it will rankle even more the General Public, it will be viewed even more unfavorably as the line will be "Look, they can do what they want, get investigated and still get away with it" Just can't see an out for Johnson, bar his removal. Having said that, looks like we will just jump from frying pan into the fire with any of the successors.

I suspect it's about whether or not the garden of Number 10 counts as a workplace and they will attempt to claim that all of these 'parties' were just extensions of people going about their work. I don't agree and think it's a weak defence but I imagine that's going to be their spin and it'll come down to whether or not Sue Gray buys it.

If he can and does remove those aspects before the report is published, the public may not actually be able to see them, but we will sure as hell still be able to smell them, and they smell of foulness and corruption. In fact, they stink of it.

Agree. They’re going to argue on a technicality and find the smallest loophole to say he hasn’t broke the law, but it was misguided etc It then comes down to if he misled the House, as he has previously said there were no parties and he was of course at one of them.

Of course they don’t. What the plebs think doesn’t matter. One rule for the ruling class, one for the plebs. Natural order of things. Bit like the old Victorian value that still lingers with them that the poor deserve to be poor. However, given what a duplicitous, craven bunch they are, when the penny, or in their case gold sovereign, drops that the peasants aren’t buying their nonsense, they’ll flush Johnson away like last nights curry without a second thought. Just as they did Thatcher and others.

Following in the USA's footsteps, which isn't really surprising given the common sources of money and ideology steering things behind the scenes. I'm a little bit angry and very frustrated by it all, but I think the overriding emotion is embarrassment at what we're becoming. Our Banana Republic government, rising inequality/lack of national compassion (linked to the govt of course), Brexsh*t, the rise in racism, endless culture wars, etc., etc. Such a mess.

He will go before the next General Election. The only question is on whose timescale that will be. The majority of the Tories will want him to take as much flak as possible for the cost of living increases and the energy prices (plus you would assume a new variant of some description) over the next few months and look to move him on in September/October. That will give the new leader a few months to look like they are making things better in the hope they can call a new GE next May. You get the impression Labour don't actually want him to go, but their best chance would to push him to go now so they can have a clear run at the next one with all the price rises due to kick in. Not to mention Northern Ireland and the 'B' word.

Spot on. Governments have used media to leak information to their advantage for years. I first saw it for real in 2008 in connection with something I was working on. Because it happens so much, everyone knows how to do it for personal and/or party advantage. Little stays secret for long in government.
