Would Alok Sharma be a suitable replacement for Boris Johnson? 11:05 - Jan 25 with 1483 views | WeWereZombies | Don't know much about him but he makes the right noises on climate change: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-60115969 However, he does also seem to try and take up positions that face both ways at the same time, e.g. expansion of Heathrow Airport: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alok_Sharma#Heathrow_Airport Clearly a solution to the in all but name vacant Prime Minister position, presently occupied by someone who is Pretty Vacant, is needed urgently for the good of our four nations but perhaps Sharma would be best left in charge of the tricky business of trying to hold other nations (and our own ones too) to the commitments made at CoP26 for the next ten months?

Would Alok Sharma be a suitable replacement for Boris Johnson? on 11:19 - Jan 25 with 1407 views | Churchman | It’s a bit like asking which disease you least want, but he comes across as ok. Bit dull, but it’s more about whether he can do the job. Unlike Liz Truss, who I know is as thick as slurry, I know nothing about him. Sunak seems quite capable and I’ve heard he’s very organised, but in truth I don’t know what he stands for.

Maybe, but I am asking what is best for the nations. Conservative Party members do not seem to have been very good at delivering that of late.

Would Alok Sharma be a suitable replacement for Boris Johnson? on 11:45 - Jan 25 with 1313 views | Swansea_Blue | Difficult to say yes, as he's done his fair share of defending the indefensible during the term of this government. But then I suppose the odds of finding a good one amongst this lot are slim. Sunak would be poor. There's more substance to a vacuum.

I was replying to the bloke who said that Tories wouldn't vote for an immigrant. Re Sharma. I wasn't too impressed with him at business. But he did take the Cop role very seriously and worked very hard to get an agreement. He was in tears when it fell short. Was that because he cares deeply for the environment or was it a sense of personal failure? I don't know enough about the bloke to make a judgement. But that opens up a whole new debate. Do we have a succession problem in UK politics? Before John Major was fast tracked into position in order to stop Heseltine, the candidate for that position usually had a long and distinguished career in politics. They served as Secretary of State In several departments, were seasoned debaters in the HOC and their integrity and honesty had been tested over a long period of time. Since Major we seem to have had a succession of party leaders and Prime Ministers with very little experience. If Sunak becomes PM, then both leaders of the two great parties of government will have had less than 8 years each in the HOC.

My position also, but under the Fixed-term Parliaments Act 2011 we are saddled with the various permutations this administration may take until 2nd May, 2024.

I'm very happy for boris to cling on to office until the next election, getting more and more damaged by the week. Even if he rides this catastrophe out, he'll continue to foul up everything he touches. He's not Winston Churchill. He's Frank Spencer.

Thanks for depressing me with that. The odd thing is that by clinging on to BJ they’re absolutely killing themselves. Burying their heads in the sand. Don’t the Tory MPs get that Johnson’s been found out? That his credibility is zilch? The closer they get to the next GE, the less chance they have to do anything about it. Maybe, like John Major’s lot, they want to return to the glorious comfort of the opposition benches. Fine if you are like my constituency where a steaming pile of dog mess would get in with a blue rosette, but not so fine for the majority of their MPs. I don’t understand it

Though they were intending to repeal the fixed term parliament act. Well they announced that intention in Marcy 2021

The four MPs I've seen most fervently defending Johnson on the media have been Jacob-Rees Mogg, Michael Fabricant, Nadine Dorries and Peter Bone. I don't think it's a coincidence that they're all sitting on comfortable five-figure majorities. They don't need to stay in touch with their constituents because they know they'll be voted back in no matter what. Bone was even on Newsnight last night claiming that the BBC license fee was raised more often by vote than partygate.

Owen Patterson had a huge 5 figure majority, and whilst he was obviously a piece of sh1t, so are Rees-Mogg and Dorries. Bone is a mildly likeable madman, and Fabricant is living proof that Tory voters will vote for a complete clown if he wears a blue rosette. However both of them will suffer if they continue to defend Johnson.

A by-election is completely different though. Aside from JRM, they’re all safe as houses in their seats, and even he’ll be fine because the Labour and Lib Dem vote is split almost equally in his constituency so there isn’t an obvious tactical vote.
