Ukraine latest: Very obvious false flag part 634 14:04 - Feb 21 with 2104 viewsSteve_M

The Russian military are claiming to have destroyed Ukrainian vehicles within Russia.

That sounds incredible convincing but looks to be another step up in terms of posturing.

Unwise to put a timescale on it, but that won't stop me - looks like it's kicking off in the next day or two.

Or it might just be very-brinkmanship from Putin.

This is unlikely to be so quick and easy as Georgia, either in terms of the fighting or the international reaction.

Does make me wonder why it's kicking off now. Does Putin feel vulnerable, is he ill? Are we watching an impersonator and he's already dead*?

I am fed up of Putin and Russia. Let's just have it with them once and for all.

So what if a few nukes get chucked about. Half of Russia's rusty old ICBMs wont work I can guarantee.

If it's just a conventional war, NATO will kick their butts.

The problem with following Ukraine is similar to the problem I had following Syria ... who to believe? These modern conflicts have become so much about information and misinformation warfare that it’s difficult to see the wood from the trees.

And yes, they involve Putin’s Russia in both cases but they also involve us and our allies.

This is where the lack of trustworthy or particularly probing media in the UK (in fact they’re more likely to transmit the message uncritically rather than even attempt to analyse it) is a massive problem.

Well that's why we do missile tests. One of out many was a dud.

I'd still say our stuff will be much more reliable than Russia's hardware when push comes to shove.

He is 69 so to make his mark on history it has to be sooner rather than later. The west is weak, militarily and particularly politically. Biden has shown his hand and so have the Germans. They are all that matters.

If I was them, I’d swallow Ukraine right now and follow it up immediately with the Baltic states. Threaten the rest of the Slavic states and Poland and then with the rusty sabre rattling (toothpick in the UKs case) at its highest, go to the negotiating table with the west. The EU would be grovelling in gratitude and Biden looking forward to his afternoon nap.

What Putin is doing is outrageous and disgraceful - but entirely logical from his viewpoint. The real tragedy is the innocent lives that’ll be lost.

I agree we plebs have to try and keep open minds on the info we digest.

What's interesting this time around is that the west is actually waging an open info war with these various intelligence leeks about Putin deciding this or wanting to fake that. They seem to be trying to influence his actions by calling them out in advance (if taken at face value). Form my know nothing position, it looks like this has at least bought some time if nothing else.

It's quite something to first look for faults with Western media, of which there are many, when virtually every TV channel in Russia is currently showing a choreographed Security Council meeting clearly looking to serve as a pretext for escalation.

Russia have around 7000 nuclear weapons. It's estimated that you need about three nukes to completely wipe out the average city. We'd need a lot more than half of them to be duds.

Obviously, I don’t trust an authoritarian and less civilised state and its media. Problem is I don’t trust ours either given the shonky overseas interventions and narratives of the past couple of decades.

Surely, experience tells us we need to be sceptical of both sides?

You are right. Experience certainly does tell us we should be sceptical of western media and politicians (if you can call the UKs oaf and his shower politicians).

But the weight of evidence both from what is coming out of that part of the world, history and Putin’s attitude towards what he considers his, tells me what he is about to do is wrong in every way.

The biggest risk is if things don’t go Russia’s way with any invasion. They have hundreds of battlefield nuclear weapons which, if they explode on contact, rather than in the air, cause devastation over a relatively small area and with limited radioactive fallout.

The West just doesn’t have such weapons available to them. The only response the West has is cruise missiles or escalate further.

Undoubtedly.

Equally, is it right for us to rattle our sabres and play up to the domestic audience or the international community where we still want to be seen as players? Does that make peace more or less likely?

I have a fundamental lack of trust in us to do the right thing either.

I actually think meeting threat with threat is the only way to stop a crude man like Putin. The alternative is letting Putin take what he thinks is his, as all totalitarians do.

Given that the best we can offer is the Battle of Britain flight, a few old boats and a militia sized army, a fraud like a Johnson mouthing off is hardly going to cut much ice with the Russians so you could ask whether he’s wise to be doing it. I think not because we are irrelevant and have been since the end of WW2.

Peace will come only if the Russian economy implodes again and that’s not likely while so many countries are reliant on its gas and oil.
