Did the Belfast Agreement essentially lock us into the EU? 10:18 - Jun 15 with 3225 viewsTrequartista

I’m sure it’s more nuanced than that but is that what it boils down to in the end? We can’t have a border on the Irish mainland and we can’t have a border in the Irish Sea.

Thanks for the link. The tweets are from 2018 so i’m not sure who he is referring to when he says “you” and “your” is it Mrs May ? Anyway I think you are saying the answer to my question is yes, we are essentially locked in?

No, not entirely. A customs union would essentially resolve a lot of the issues with the NI border whilst retaining most of the perceived 'benefits' of brexit

It doesn't. It is based on our membership of the European Court of Human Rights (nothing to do with EU) and there being no border on the island of Ireland. There's nothing in terms of treaty or agreement that makes a border in the Irish sea impossible.

It's a political decision of this government and the DUPes in Northern Ireland to make it an issue, namely by lying to the public and saying it wasn't going to happen, despite signing a treaty to say it was going happen.

It really isn't as simple as that.

He’s referring to an article written by Johnson in the Telegraph at the time.

It's not strictly you I was trying to signal to. Some people will inevitably need the colouring book version.

As I understood it, the EU would not allow the UK to leave the EU and stay in the customs union?

The Irish Sea border doesn’t have a treaty preventing it but it splits the uk by having different rules in NI to GB creating in effect a spilt in the UK?

Not true, May ruled it out to appease the ERG-wing of the Tory Party.

The UK never did, and still hasn't, worked out what it wanted from Brexit because it was a mishmash of mutually incompatible desires.

And to the answer the Q in your OP, no it doesn't but it should have highlighted why any change to the constitutional status of Northern Ireland should have been treated with far more care and attention than it was, and is now, by this government.

An unnecessary peacock dance that distracts them from getting on with what they should be doing. Although a cynic would say that they're not interested in doing a good job at governing.

There was no mandate for leaving the Single Market or Customs Union.

Parties proposing those courses of action received less than 50% of the votes at the 2017 and 2019 General Elections.

Completely undemocratic.

Indeed.

And, whilst hindsight, is easy had May proposed membership of both whilst leaving the political institutions as a solution for a country split down the middle by the divisive and unnecessary referendum then the country would probably be in a better place now.

If we take the starting condition that the GFA has to be maintained, the UK and EU have 2 options. Either a border in the Irish sea because of divergence between the UK and EU (hard brexit) or for the UK to leave the EU, but remain in the customs union (soft brexit).

The government has chosen option 1, knowing full well it meant an internal UK border, but has lied about it extensively from the go to pretend it was never the plan. Now they are playing Chicken with the EU and US threatening to endanger the GFA by removing the protocol.
