Sunak is in the weird position of being the MPs favourite but without a clear path to being leader due to unpopularity with the members.
Given that likelihood, I think Truss is probably the best compromise between someone who would take the Tories into opposition without completely destroying the country while in government for a year or two. I get the impression she's not particularly effective so while she'd be a bad PM I think the damage she would do is limited. Her poundshop Thatcher tribute act just makes her look ridiculous and I can't see her appealing to the public.
I think Tugendhat and Mordaunt would do quite well in an election, and on the flip side whilst Badenoch and Braverman would probably burn the Tory party to the ground, I still wouldn't be willing to let either of them be in power, even for a short amount of time, because their ideas are so extreme. | |

That is a very good point. I’m no fan of Thatcher but I suspect she’d never have gone near a referendum. I also suspect the humiliation and contempt heaped on Cameron and May would not have happened if she’d have gone over there. But then given Thatcher was broadly pro EU, I doubt it’d have got that far. They’d have given her what Cameron asked and got his rear end kicked for - probably. I suspect Blair might have made more headway too.
Looking back, it’s astonishing how weak Cameron was. A real cardboard man. Shiny butt cheek face, slick suit, ready smile and no idea whatsoever. A lot of the mess we are in begins with him. |  | | |
