After 13 games last season 17:56 - Oct 8 with 2515 viewsVic

Plymouth weer top with with 26 pts. This year they are top with 31pts. Last year they fell away and ’only’ got 80 pts and missed out on the P/Os. I don’t think we should assume they will do the same this season. Looks like we’ve got a serious rival in them. Not sure how much money they’ve spent on their squad?

By comparison we were 13th with 17 pts. This year we have 30. Vast, vast improve in every way, and without spending a fortune on new players. As things stand I think we’re looking good for Top 2. I can’t see us not making the P/O’s now. Even to do that would be a big improvement on the last few years.

Plymouth are the best team I’ve seen in this league so far. Their movement on the ball is a level above ours imo, so they’re the one to beat for me. Whoever finishes above them will be going up.

But that’s only so far, and we know how much it can change (and they do too after last season).

Poll: Do you think Pert is key to all of this?

I can't see Sheffield Wednesday or Pompey dropping off much either.

It's a marathon not a sprint, the likes of Peterborough are bound to pick up and finish strongly, they do it every season

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!

How did they lose 5-1 to Charlton? Generally interested, as it is crazy based on their form against the top sides

Pompy are very meh to me if we're talking about automatics. A firm 5/6th is about where I see them but could also see them dipping out.

I guess we’re gonna find out if it’s better to the hunted rather than the hunter!

Wycombe are pretty streetwise for this league so wouldn’t surprise me to see them flirting outside the playoffs come end of the season.

Oxford also have form for strong finishes in past couple of seasons and could do the same again so think that group jockeying for playoffs will grow

Hopefully we’ll be sat well above that battle and keep a healthy gap whilst sat in the top 2

From the equivalent set of fixtures last season, we only took 9 points. It has been a remarkable upturn in performances and results. Still more than twice as many matches left as we have played. We need to keep at it.

Also, when being the hunted you don't have to be faster than the hunter ... just faster than the one running alongside you.

Plymouth are outperforming their XG, but have played all the top sides as well that might explain it but they aren’t going to keep up their home form of 7 from 7. Good side though but maybe over performing in their current position.

Would be massively surprised with Wycombe being up there this season, they will turn over some of the better sides especially at home but they don’t have enough about them this year, had a poor summer window and theyve lost a lot of their generals over the last 18 months, will be a consolidation season for them 14 - 10 place finish I would have thought.

They got a red card at 3-1, Wilson was sent off. By all accounts they were poor that night and would have lost anyway but the sending off presumably made the scoreline look worse than it would have been otherwise.

Edit: Just double checked and the red card was actually at 1-0

Obviously I’m biased but I didn’t think Plymouth were better than us when we played them. Clearly the best team we’ve faced this season as they’re the only ones to have beaten us and the only ones to have taken points off us whilst playing good football. But head to head I still thought we were better.

We must aim for top one. For somebody usually pessimistic (every right to be after the last 20 years), I believe we might run away with this division. Have I lost my mind? Should I have laid off that single malt tonight? Maybe, but my reasons are

1. We have made a good start with points on the board.
2. We’ve played teams from the top to bottom and only one has really competed with us - at home about 300 miles away on a Sunday lunchtime.
3. Most games we have dominated possession. Have we made the most of it? Not always but it’s a helluva lot harder for the opposition to do much when they don’t have the ball.
4. Unlike under lambert where good starts we’re based on a fair bit of fortune and we needed to step up a level. We never did. That’s not the case this time. The Morecambe chap was right to praise his team, but the reality was we had 70% possession, most of the chances, hit the woodwork three times and missed a penalty.
5. We’ve taken a fair few injuries, but haven’t looked weaker.
6. Squad and management look tight and focussed.
7. We have more better players than most.

I just have ‘that’ feeling about us. I maybe wrong, but I don’t think there’s anyone we need to worry about. Only ourselves. Just a view.
