Why is this considered xenophobic 07:07 - Oct 19 with 1986 viewsgtsb1966

absolutely ridiculous that he even has to explain anything. Too many people looking for something that isn't there. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/63309620

I think it's simply deflection from the Man City hierarchy. The comments from Klopp were basically highlighting (in response to a question) the financial advantage City have.

LFC issue a statement and City fans were criticised by LFC for the usual chanting of "Murderers" "Always the victims" "The S*n was right..." as well as some tasteless graffiti.

Some LFC fans also behaved like idiots (coins at Pep and something thrown at City bus)

And in the fall out, the City heirarchy decide to go on the attack with the accusation of xenophobia rather than reflect on and address the actions of some of their fans.

Fair to say City's reactions have not gone down well with a particularrly scathing piece in the Mail.

"Klopp had said City were one of three clubs - including Qatari-owned Paris St-Germain and the Saudi-backed Newcastle United - with unmatched spending power."

It's probably more around the fact that the 3 clubs with the highest/unlimited spending power are all run by awful regimes who show huge levels of intolerance whilst expecting the West to tolerate their intolerance.

So a bit more nuanced than that article is making out and he's totally right. Those 3 clubs shouldn't be owned by whom they are and they shouldn't have unlimited spending power.

Football should long have been ashamed about this situation but it seems the powers that be are fine with it.

You're right, that is ridiculous. And shame on Man City for suggesting it, because frivolous claims of xenophobia and racism weaken the seriousness when it's real.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

2nd Journo to Jurgen Klopp "Some people say you're difficult."

Ridiculous as Liverpool themselves are owned by wealthy foreigners.

It was clearly a point about sovreign wealth funds (more or less thinly disguised) having near-unlimited funds, in football terms. With which it is impossible to argue.

All of this.

These ridiculous claims of xenophobia do nothing but dilute genuine claims where it is happening.

I like it. It means we can shut down those salty Pompey fans who harp on about our financial muscle as being mere xenophobes.

Reminds me of an incident some years ago when the bloke I was working with grumbled to one of the surveyors about something a plumber had done. Surveyor then goes to the plumber and says "so-and-so says your work is cr@p."

It's not xenophobic, it's a fact. Man C have more spending power than any PL club.

Same foe PSG and Newcastle will be there once they gave some champions league revenue.

TBH I have rather ENJOYED watching PSG wind up Real and Barca who have for years out spent their rivals but what he says is 100% true

"When asked if they were "borderline xenophobic" ...

Anyone know who the stirry media person was who relayed the comment? Seems on them really, doubt it was from one of the better quality papers or broadcasters.

But does it beat the reporter who interviewed a fan outside Old Trafford, who was said to be a 'source close to the club'.

I make you right Stokie but since when has big business (and that's what football at the top level is) been bothered about the source of income or investment? As a nation we bring in billions selling weapons to shady regimes and barely anyone bats an eyelid.
