do not dominate the footballing world now.

I'm sure the eventual winners will come from one of these continents but they no longer have hegemony. Africa and Asia have some seriously good teams.

I don't know about that, they've certainly improved but it will be a few tournaments until a side from Asia or Africa is fancied as one of the favourites. I hope it happens, but I think you've gone a bit early.

What I am saying is that teams from Europe & S America should no longer be expected to cruise past them. Most of them are not "minnows" any more.

It's been 20 years since a non-European team won the tournament and I find it hard to see that changing anytime soon.

Outside of Brazil and Argentina, South American teams are bang average though. I can see a few Asian and African countries taking the Uruguay/Colombia type role at future World Cups. Honestly, too many European teams qualify for the World Cup too. The likes of Poland have no business being there. Utter dirge with no hope of doing anything interesting.

Agree, the standard across the board has certainly risen. Most teams are pretty well organised, and come to the tournament with a defined way they are wanting to play. The days of countries turning up looking like they have never even played football before are over.

There aren't too many easy games these days, even England putting six past Iran is a bit of an anomaly. It's like us playing some of the dross in League One. We may be clearly superior in all areas, but it doesn't always play out like that.

I mean, they hadn't qualified for years, so there's one or two spots that are going to be open to charity cases. Next World Cup it'll be Norway getting the nod, as sponsors will be desperate to get Haaland on the biggest stage...

They don't dominate it, but they'll win it...... what? haha

African and Asia teams haven't always been "walk-overs". Cameroon in Italia 90, Korea 2002, Ghana (in S Africa?) got to the latter stages.

Japan rarely get "thrashed". In fact Iran rarely got thrashed until the other day.

Seriously good teams? I think you're going a bit overboard with 2 results....

You might be right, but it seems like reading too much into a couple of opening game results to me. I'll be surprised if more than two or three of them make it to the knock outs of ten sides that play in those two confederations. I also think you will see teams other than England give many of them a battering yet. Who knows, but we saw South Korea beat Germany at the last tournament, Ghana robbed of a semi final spot by Suarez in 2010. To me, not much has changed yet.

Wait till the 48-team tournament in 2026. There are going to be 9 Asian teams and Qatar are the 4th highest ranked in the continent so think of the dross that will qualify as well.

32 teams is the right number, there's no need to mess around with it. The group stages will be dull.

I certainly enjoy watching some of the Asian and African sides more than the likes of Poland, Croatia and Denmark. I could see what you say as more likely, but there is no real threat to the actual hierarchy any time soon.

Perhaps the expansion to 48 teams will help with that, as the majority of extra teams will come from Asia and Africa. That said, I think it will be groups of three which just lends itself to collusion between the European sides a la West Germany and Austria in 1982.

Argentina might have difficulty cheating their way to glory with VAR being used these days.

Well if any nation has the means to deliver a big brown envelope to FIFA, it's Norway.

A joint tournament hosted by China and North Korea will probably happen in 2030 given how FIFA operates.

I was having a similar conversation with a friend yesterday, he was saying that while one day a 'non-traditional' team could win in the the meantime there are a lot of teams who have never one anything, have no real hope of winning anything just there too make up the numbers

I just replied 'nah this isnt a competiton Norwich can participate in'
