Europe and South America on 16:24 - Nov 23 by Keno | I was having a similar conversation with a friend yesterday, he was saying that while one day a 'non-traditional' team could win in the the meantime there are a lot of teams who have never one anything, have no real hope of winning anything just there too make up the numbers I just replied 'nah this isnt a competiton Norwich can participate in' |
I think he meant England.

Europe and South America on 16:38 - Nov 23 with 864 views | clive_baker | There's always been results like this in the World Cup, you're right in that everyone seems to have a result in them though (perhaps aside from Qatar). I think historically lesser footballing nations have professionalised a lot on and off the pitch over time. Having said that I still can't see anyone outside of the usual suspects ultimately winning the thing. The best sides are still European + Brazil and Argentina, in fact there's no country outside of that criteria in the top 12. Having 10 of the top 12 being European nations is why I think the Euros isn't really any easier to win than the World Cup tbh.

Europe and South America on 15:08 - Nov 23 by SpruceMoose | It's been 20 years since a non-European team won the tournament and I find it hard to see that changing anytime soon. Outside of Brazil and Argentina, South American teams are bang average though. I can see a few Asian and African countries taking the Uruguay/Colombia type role at future World Cups. Honestly, too many European teams qualify for the World Cup too. The likes of Poland have no business being there. Utter dirge with no hope of doing anything interesting. |
I was thinking that there should be more European teams in there personally. Hey ho.

Really? Like who? There aren't many who don't make it! You have to be genuinely appalling not to make it in fact!

Europe and South America on 15:33 - Nov 23 by Mach_foreignBlue | So did Argentina in 1990 after losing to Cameroon in their opening game. |
And neither of them won the tournament, Spain in 2010 lost their opening game and did win however :)

Europe and South America on 15:16 - Nov 23 by quirkie | Argentina and Germany losing to diddies, England running riot. Nope, not going to watch this world cup, not a real one :) |
And yet here you are offering an opinion and knowing what’s going on.

He never ever thought that he’d get away with it. Strange that Trevor Fenwicks elbow in Maradona’s face never gets a mention. A more dangerous cowardly form of cheating. [Post edited 23 Nov 2022 17:10]

Europe and South America on 18:38 - Nov 23 with 734 views | Trequartista | Teams from Africa and Asia have been breaking through for about 30 years. I don't think a couple of dodgy results for Argentina and Germany changes much, let's wait and see how many reach the quarter and semi finals.

Italy, Ukraine and Czech Republic are all decent sides, off the top of my head. The current number of European entrants is correct in a 32-team tournament but to be adding 16 next time with only 3 of those from Europe is ridiculous. If the 9 Asian teams next time are the highest ranked from their confederation, Oman are going to qualify. There are 16 European teams next time and if the highest ranked get through then Austria, Turkey and the Czechs would miss out at the same time as Oman get in. I'm all for new teams qualifying if they deserve it but having 9 Asian countries and only 16 from Europe is wrong.
