The craziness/unfairness of the independence question being under the preserve of the UK government rather than the country looking to be independent will probably help in the long run.
The UK government, and the right-wing press, have of course argued the diametrically opposite view re: sovereignty and “independence” from the EU.

A setback. But pretty much as expected.

Know yer place Koonters. It's Westminster's decision whether you get to determine your own future, so pipe down and shut it.

I think it should be a UK wide in five parts
1, can we get rid of Wales 2, Should we tell the Scots to **** off 3, if the Scots go can we lump the Georgies in with them 4, is it time we did the decent thing and let Ireland unite 5, can we just forget Brexit and of back to being sensible

So you wish your future monarch King George to be the first King of an Independent Scotland?
(Yeah, appreciate they had some kings before the Union)

Genuine question, there was a referendum in 2014 which confirmed a majority for remaining part of the UK. Assuming that was a genuine process with no concerns over fair process etc why should there be another referendum now? Should they be every few years? Would the SNP hold them as frequently to rejoin the UK should they get a result they like in a future one?
FWIW I think it should be a decision for the Scottish people to make but I’m not sure that it’s a question that can or should be continually asked indefinitely can it?

In 2014 they voted to remain in the UK and EU.

Brexit rather undermined that argument.
Material change of what was on offer to stay with the UK. People voted to remain in a UK that was part of the EU. Since then a majority of Scots voted to remain with the EU yet they were still forced (as part of the UK) to leave.
Otherwise, I think that argument (of waiting a generation) would be valid.

That’s fair, hadn’t taken that into account.
A generational referendum doesn’t feel unreasonable in the circumstances but would then hope and expect that result to be honoured and respected by all parties but I don’t hold much hope for that given the significance of the decision and the history of arguements.

Speaking as someone with two Scottish parents, I was persuaded by the independence cause during the 2014 referendum not least because of the total anti-independence stance of the entire UK media.
So, if I were there, I would vote for independence, but I fear a strong majority may not emerge for another twenty years or so until people of my mother's generation and younger are no longer with us.
For this reason, I think it is best not to have a referendum in the near future.
EDIT: if you look at papers like the Mail and Telegraph, Sturgeon is clearly the most-hated women in England.

Scexit is built on pretty much the same lies as Brexit.
I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

But Scotland has been saddled with the Tories for most of the last 40 years when it never voted for them. And just look at all the small eastern European countries which have obtained their independence in the last 30 years without catastrophe
I think the Proclaimers summed it up best.

My lame contribution: Nicola will be secretly relieved - she didn't really want another ref now as the polls aren't quite right. This way, she gets to continue with the aggrieved narrative right into the next election, while the UK govt continues to fund the Scottish budget deficit in a massive recession.
Has anyone ever looked at their own postings for last day or so? Oh my... so sorry. Was Ullaa

I think that is spot on, although Scottish oil funded the UK government for much of the 80s, so I suppose it's swings and roundabouts. Indeed, maybe the barriers to trade between the UK and the EU will be eased in the next few years, which will help the cause of independence.

I'm not sure that wanting to be the next Albania is a particularly ambitious target...
