A good or bad time to play Pompey? 10:31 - Dec 29 with 3221 viewsringwoodblue

I’m a firm believer that the fixture list and the circumstances of a club at the time you play them has quite a bearing on results and the final league positions.

Take Wycombe for example. I’m fairly sure we would have beaten them if we’d played them earlier in the season and not recently when they’re on a winning run and over their injury problems.

Today looks a good time to play Pompey as they are on a poor run, not scoring many and confidence is low at Fratton Park. However, poor runs come to an end at some point and I fear that we might see a reaction from them today. Depending on the players that McKenna has available with injuries and illness in the squad, we are certainly going to have to be on our best form to get a win today.

Oddly enough I was thinking along these lines at the weekend, in that Oxford were on a decent run and that it might be a bad time to be playing them. That turned out to be misplaced concern!

If we're able to put out more or less the same team as on Monday then I'm fairly sure we'll be fine tonight.

All balances itself out IMO so not worth worrying about.

The OP is classic Town fan. Worry about teams in form, worry about teams out of form, worry about everything.

Shouldn't care about other teams.

Just focus on ourselves and producing on the pitch. When we play well we are better than anyone else in this division.

Listening to the Oxford commentary for the last game, they are very clear on that point - they consider that they were competitive with Plymouth and should have beaten Wednesday, but they feel they got absolutely nowhere near us and that was the most comprehensive beating they have seen their team suffer in years.

If Pompey are serious about promotion, I’d say there was more pressure on them than us given their league position.

An early Town goal would be nice to ease the nerves, but we don’t make anything easy…!

Their fans on twitter and their forums all seemingly believe they’ll be getting a thumping. I doubt Cowley is too far from the sack as well. Maybe it’s just remembering last season and the 0-4, but they’ll be tough to beat

As others have said I think it balances out and the messaging from management is very even keel, so I doubt the players will give it much thought.

I think on the balance though it's more good than bad. A bumper crowd and their form mean the atmosphere could get pretty toxic if we can dominate the ball. They'll be bang up for it though, and we'll have to get at them from minute 1.

All depends how we play. Harness and Chaplin I've not liked that much as a pair however on boxing day they were unplayable.

Aluko will be key imo tonight. He ran the game last season. I think we could see him start with harness coming on later in the game.

All depends on these illnesses. Burns was suffering with it.. etc

We’re second from top, and if we play our usual game at pace, we will beat them regardless of their form etc.

A good time in that we have come off a good performance and should be confident (if we don't have the illness bug too bad).

Huge two games away to Portsmouth and Lincoln. Neither lose many at home. Portsmouth one in 2022 I think and Lincoln none this season.

With Plymouth and Sheff Wed at home for next two we really don't want to slip up now.

If we can get an early goal that should sucker punch an already wounded fan base. The worst thing we can do is give them any encouragement tonight. They have a strange obsession with us, so any sign that they could get anything will lift what can be a pretty powerful crowd. Pretty sure whoever scores the first one wins.

Think it will be a tough game. They’ve only lost 1 at home last time I looked, so aren’t a pushover.

I think we'll see plenty of changes from the Oxford game. I've got a feeling Jackson and Aluko will both start.

Forget Wycombe. It was men against boys and they didn’t look like a team on a good run. Stupid goal to concede and 99/100 we win that game.

Agreed, but we have a better team, a better playing style and so we should win.

It's interesting that Jackson gets picked quite a fair bit yet some still see it a shock when people think he might start a game.

Aside from the illness situation - which we don’t know full extent of - there doesn’t seem to be much need to change the team that brushed aside Oxford.

We have a good squad. If McKenna chooses to play Jackson at least we know there will be a reason behind it rather than Lambert drawing names out of a hat.

He's started 2 of the last 3. I think with the illness situation and the fact tonight has come so soon after Oxford we might see a couple of changes from the side that started on Boxing day.

Very true. Talking of Lambert, was reading Phil’s report from this day 3 years ago (5-3 defeat at Lincoln) and Lambert managed to get in three “I’ve played for massive clubs.”. Even in retirement you can picture him at the supermarket or post office telling anyone who’ll listen that he knows what it’s like to play for a big club.

Or even on the golf course (taking out the driver): "I've worked with bigger clubs than this".

Regardless of the other team's form, on our day, we are capable of beating everyone in this division and even on our off days we're far better than most and I dare say even for Portsmouth.

However, as we know from games against Lincoln, Cheltenham, Wycombe, etc, a lot will depend on how clinical we are in front of goal (sometimes like Boxing Day we are, others like Wycombe we aren't) and if the ball drops for us.
