Awful penalty. It can’t be that hard for a professional to hit it hard and a foot or two below the bar, I mean they train a fair bit. Another sign of the weakness that’s within sone of our key players

Another thing… penalties that go straight down the middle deserve to be missed on 08:12 - Feb 12 with 2674 views | Churchman | It isn’t. It requires bottle to take a penalty that way and people rarely miss doing it given keeper tendency to go one way or the other. I’m surprised players don’t thump it down the middle more often. Clapham did it in the play off semi final of course and I’m glad he did. Looking at how nervous he was at the time and how weak his shot was, I doubt he’d have scored any other way.

Exactly, nervous and weak and took the penalty in exactly that manner.

To be fair I don't think Davies wanted to take the penalty he had spotted one of the Wednesday players scuffing the penalty spot so he immediately just stood on the stop to stop them doing it. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Against a tall keeper, you go low and down into the corner.... much harder for the keeper to get down to.

Think Ivan Toney, it's just a firm pass into either corner with no run up, the keeper will never get there...he practices them putting a cone in both corners of the net and passing firmly at either cone... We used to practice pens by putting the ball two feet behind the spot, making it harder, when you came to take one in a game it just seemed so easy being that little bit closer.

Doesn’t strike me as a penalty taker at all and it was a very poor penalty from somebody who has missed them previously - surely you have to either blast it or place it in a corner in those circumstances. Sums us up that we don’t have somebody capable of grabbing the ball and scoring in a situation like that
Another thing… penalties that go straight down the middle deserve to be missed on 10:35 - Feb 12 with 2183 views | LankHenners | Nah, you’ve just got to smash it if you’re going to go there unless you fake the ‘keeper out and can roll it out the way of his dive. Didn’t feel confident when Chaplin took the ball to be honest. He’s brilliant in those positions where he has to get a shot away quickly and hits it on instinct but with time to think and added pressure it didn’t feel likely to go in for me. Hirst picked the ball up and while I can see why there was maybe a bit more pressure on him to score specifically he might have been a better bet.

Tommy always kept his on the ground and usually to the keepers left ! For me there is no right or wrong way to take a penalty , leather it in the corner even Harry Kane can miss doing that !

Surely the fact that keepers don't always get down low into a corner is because they are in some doubt about where the ball is going to go - rather than just low to the left or low to the right.
Another thing… penalties that go straight down the middle deserve to be missed on 11:55 - Feb 12 with 2064 views | eddiespearitt03 | Chaplin has been pretty good most of this season . Missing a penalty is 80% ridiculous. Most goalkeepers expect a ball hit with blast force so that is the first mistake for a penalty taker . Or a soft shot trying to be clever can fail Most goal keepers commit themselves to a low shot. It is just me ....in my playing days I never missed a penalty. What goal keepers don't expect is a high shot....Not a fancy chip either. Just a simple curled ball in either top corner for a first penalty with a steady pace. ..If awarded a 2nd penalty then it was obvious to change things.

Must admit that when i played, (only Sunday league in Bury St.Eds.) I always stayed upright for pens and was surprised how many i managed to get in the way of.

Maybe thirty years ago, but keepers now are so athletic and mobile that diving low is their bread and butter. High and hard, statistically wields the best percentage of scoring but is also quite risky as well. Going straight isn’t cowardly at all - some keepers dive a split second before the penalty is actually taken so going straight is the lost logical thing to do at times.
Another thing… penalties that go straight down the middle deserve to be missed on 08:13 - Feb 13 with 1510 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | Utter nonsense. If Chaplin hit that ball with more power it goes above his legs and in. Then this post never happens. More often than not the keepers dive so taking a pen down the middle is fine. You just need to put more power on it than Champlin did. He dribbled it.

If he hits it with more power, it just rebounds further away. If he'd hit it with more height on the other hand....
