Humphreys - what next? 16:59 - Mar 5 with 2177 viewsringwoodblue

I’ve been really impressed with Cameron Humphreys this season. I know he’s only 19 but has shown a maturity way beyond his years and has been so important with our injury crisis in central midfield. With Luongo showing his class and Ball and Camara due to return to fitness soon (hopefully), my question is, where does this leave young Humphreys for the remainder of this season and next as he is arguably our best young player for many years. Is a loan the best option next season and if so, to what sort of team and in what division?

Watching Liverpool v Man Utd, I am reminded that Harvey Elliott is too only 19 (soon to be 20) so if it’s good enough for the likes of Liverpool then should McKenna be trying to keep Humphreys involved as a regular in the first team?

I guess a lot will depend on what division we are playing in ourselves next season but just interested to hear others views.

He's fully match fit which Ball and Camara won't be, so that probably keeps him fairly high up the pecking order. Think next season is harder to call, if everyone is fit then does he go out for a year on loan? Might be best for his development but he's shown he's good enough to be a first teamer here as well, so not a straightforward decision.

For a young player in the modern game he’s played a lot and been brilliant. I’d go so far to say that given our injury problems, without him the play offs would have been doubtful.

For me, he’s first team squad next year. If that means somebody else has to move on, no problem. No loaning out. Get him in, play him whatever the division.

I think he has done well and developed with us. However, if he had been first choice for us all season, I don't think we would be as high in the table as we are. I can't see him getting a lot of pitch time in the Championship next season so, if we go up, I think a high level League 1 loan for him to play regularly would be best.

If we don't go up, I think we could use him and develop him ourselves. However, that would mean too little room for all of Morsy, Evans, Luongo, Ball, Camara, Harper and El Mizouni as well as him. Would we be moving a couple of those on?

A lot also depends on how much he continues to develop over the next 5-6 months. A big pre-season for him in July/August quite possibly.

A lot depends on the fitness of the more senior CMs. Even though Evans has played well earlier in the season- I don't trust his fitness. Same with Camara. Same Luogo. I would move Evans on as I think he's only good for 20 games a season max. We might even have to sign another senior CM - lad from Posh, perhaps - as we need 2 senior CMs we can trust the fitness of along with Morsy. I'd keep Humphreys as a versatile squad player who could also play wide left or 10. He'll only get better.

There are two many ifs and buts at this stage.

He has played way more than he would have been expected to play this season but that has accelerated his development you could say.

The league status, the fitness status of other CMs, and his own physical and technical progress through to Aug are all open questions.

In L1 he doesn’t count towards squad numbers. It would be possible for us to go with Morsy, Evans, Ball, Camera plus Humphries. That’s 5 CMs for the cost of 4 squad places. Even if fit you could rotate through those given recent injury records. However we might decide it’s time to do something new if we are still in L1. Didn’t even mention Luongo, he’s the other side of 30. Means there are big decisions in the summer irrespective of the league in the CM alone.

He has cut his teeth this season. He needs to be part of the first team squad for me, irrespective of what division we are in. There will be some exits from the club in central midfield. If they are all fit, we can't carry them all. Humphreys, however, will still not count in the squad total numbers.

I think there's a case that there will be games (particularly in the Championship next year) where he fits the strategy for the day.

You could argue to some extent Morsy, Ball and Luongo are similar-ish players (physical or physical with a ball carrying creativity) then Evans is a deep lying playmaker, Camara is forward carrier and almost another 10, and Humphreys is a bit of Evans generally a bit further forward with a bit of 10 thrown in. There'll be games where that's exactly what's needed.

He's shown he can play at the top end of league one. Whether we go up or not I think he will be part of the squad next season.

Truly impaired.

Indeed. Was just going to say that he’s a balanced mix of different talents and attributes. And for me that would indicate he’ll do well at a higher level without being exposed as the other players might. Especially as his current weaker areas like size and strength should develop rapidly as he grows physically and with experience.

I also think he’s one of the best players in and around the box as he plays with his head up and doesn’t look panicky. That measured, dinked pull back for Harness’s volley wouldn’t come from many other players in our squad.

If we go up then I think a loan to a progressive team would be beneficial for all parties (much like how El Miz is looking the business at Leyton Orient).

If Luongo keeps performing like this, then I'd be surprised if he's not offered a 2 year contract.

So then we have Morsy, Luongo, Ball, Evans and then Camara, potentially El Miz too in the centre.

The other thing to think about is where are we planning on playing Humphreys long term?

Would you put El Mizouni ahead of Humphreys? If you don't then another loan or sale of him would make sense. I wonder what ceiling the coaches see both as having. Could they be our future midfield together at a higher level? If not, would we be best moving El Mizouni on permanently?

More of the same for now I imagine. This season he'll be in and around the 1st team given we currently only have 3 fit central midfielders. Camara, Ball and Evans will all take time to get up to speed, shortly after the season will be over.

Looking forward I expect at least 1 of those senior central midfielders might not be here next season, whether that be Evans, Luongo or Ball. It probably depends to some extent what division we're in, but I think we would be looking to upgrade in that area and our pursuit of Taylor at Peterborough suggests that to be the case too.

El Miz and Humpreys could well go out on loan, a full season in L1 would do them both some good if we could find the right moves. Perhaps El Miz could do another season at Orient.
