Hope he gets let out. Poor guy has been in prison for most of his adult life, but then he spent many years "fighting the system" so prolonging his sentences.

I do think he's a fascinating guy, but sure wouldnt want to be his cell mate!

Every time he's let out, something happens, he loses control and people get hurt. Has happened frequently inside, too. He's not been fighting the system, so much as other inmates and prison workers. I don't think he enjoys violence, so much as being unable to regulate and manage his own temper/rage.

Can he live in normal society? Not at all sure. Maybe in some sort of sheltered community, but there would always be a risk of things kicking off.

I never knew that fighting the system meant taking people hostages and beating up prison guards.

If there was a capable mental health support system in place in this country, then absolutely.

Unfortunately, there is no such thing, so he'd inevitably struggle and quite likely hurt people again.

I love this quote...

"I went through a phase, I couldn't help taking hostages. I was battling against the system... it was my way of getting back.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

He sounds like he would be ok if he had 7 days a week support with someone he liked and trusted. Not sure how feasible that is and it seems a no brainer to send him to a lower security prison for a year or so before having another look.

He'd be a great neighbour to have as long as you got along with him. I'd happily let him sort out cold callers for me!

He's now 70 and hasn't killed anyone. So not sure he's going to go on a murder spree, might kick the sh1t out of them though. The documentary about him on C4 last week was decent.

My interpretation was he's torn between a desire to get out and lead a quiet life or continue to enjoy the notoriety of being Charles Bronson.

Eventually "kicking the sh1t out of someone'," will end in death. He's clearly unhinged.

Did you watch the documentary last week? He hasn't been violent for years, he's 70+ and nobody has ever died at his hands but has spent 50 or so years in high security many often solitary inconfinement. If he can convince the parole board he is no longer a risk to the wider public, why not let him see his remaining years on the outside.

Nobody has died at his hands mostly because he's because he's mostly been in very controlled environments for the last 50 years;

Parole Boards aren't infallible obviously, but at least they've met him, have been able to listen to reports from those who have to deal with him daily & are therefore able to see through any devious attempts by him to pull the wool over peoples' eyes, unlike posters on internet forums.

Solitary confinement is inhumane though.
