Hirst goal verses Barnsley.... 04:38 - May 13 with 4691 viewsBigCommon

Bit of a sleepless night, so found myself rewatching a few highlights of the season..
I remember his goal being really good, at the time. But what with all the excitement and the run we were on, everything just seemed ten times better...
Having watched it again , a few times now, in a much calmer mode. I have to say, its probably my favorite goal of the season...
He's just so strong and determined, the way he shrugs of Mads Anderson and has a running battle for 20 yards. Before checking his run to get the ball out of his feet, wrong footing a second defender and finding some real composer to plant a sweetly struck shot, into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.... Its just a brilliant goal... Add to that, the importance of a 2nd goal moments before half time, in a must win game... Yep, I think that's my favorite goal.
We've been blessed with so many great goals this season. Some wonder strikes that are pleasing on the eye and some great team goals.. But the more I watch that goal from Hirst, the better it gets....
What's your favorite goal from this season.?
Doesn't have to be the best goal. Just a goal that you liked the most, for whatever reason.....

Broadhead. Sheff Wed. It ignited us. Broadhead penalty v Port Vale proved very important and it he coolness of the goal seemed to help the team into next games.

Looking back that Broadhead goal was the biggest of the season. A moment of real quality that turned the momentum in a game that has proved to be absolutely crucial in the automatic promotion race.

Seen a lot of Wednesday fans say Smith missing that one on one to make it 3-0 was the biggest moment in their season.

I think it still felt that way at the time, dragged us right back into a match we were failing badly in.

That Hirst goal at Barnsley was a great goal, turned a good position into one that was going to take some losing.

I also think that Morsy scoring at MK was critical, we had had something of a mental block away from home and needed that to get us going. Chaplain’s first against Exeter was a big goal too, easy to forget that we were a bit nervy early o that day.

For me, Chaplin's goal vs Derby was incredible. Back to front, incisive counter attacking football at it's very best. Proper team goal.

This was my favourite goal. Almost unstoppable. Brilliant goal.

For me, one of the most important was the winner ant home against Portsmouth. Ok, the ball was knocked in from no distance, but against a good side it showed that we could win after being pegged back - something we’d failed to do against better teams for literally years.

It was a ‘hello, we really are a good side’ moment.

I was there with my son and never celebrated a goal so hard in my life.
What it meant after just sneaking the lead and thinking if we could get the win promotion would be within our grasp and to be 2-nil up so quickly, incredible goal!
Every time I watch it now I fill up

In a sort of reverse take on that is one of the moments of the season that went our way at a point when that run of results was just getting going and that was the MK chance they had after about 5 minutes in the away game when I think all 7000 of us held our breaths for 5-10 seconds as events unfolded in front of us. Confidence was still a bit fragile then and going 1-0 down there may have halted us in our tracks a bit.
Was part of a 4 game run that looked ‘easier’ on paper than many fixtures prior but which we knew we had to win all of to stay in the face. Unnecessarily hard fought win in the end, should have been 4 or 5, only morsy had his shooting boots on and relatively subdued performances from the attacking players.

Agree it was probably the most important but he has his fair share of extremely important goals doesnt he? The first against Port Vale was absolutely crucial. It felt very much like Lincoln before he made that run across the defender and swept it home early enough in the 2nd half to go on and get the winner.

Woolf's block on the line was as good as a goal. In the context of our season that was a huge moment. Helped to relegate them ultimately as well, which adds to what a great moment it was.

Yes what a 12 months for MK. Pleased, as I wanted cambridge to stay up as my home town club, despite all their silly ‘derby’ shenanigans

This may have not been a goal, but Morsy in the middle of the park at Portman Road surrounded by 5 men throws one dummy then another turns and takes 3 men out before setting up an attack on the right wing attacking the North

For me the most important goals have to be either of the goals at home against Sheff Weds or Broadhead’s winning pen against Port Vale. Not necessarily the best goals, but for me they were the most important because they showed to me (us?) that we could do what we hadn’t really done for several seasons - come back and get something from losing positions.

Sheff Weds we’re flying at the time and after an atrocious first half we completely turned it around and outplayed the (at the time) best team in the league. Told me a lot about the manager and the players. oK we didn’t win, but the manner of the second half told me all I needed to know.

The game against Port Vale was slightly different in that they were typical of the smaller teams that we have struggled against for the last few seasons. At last we came back and beat them. Another season defining moment.

From then on I was confident we were the real deal.

Chaplins goal against Exeter.

Not only was it a fantastic strike, but the tension from 29k people just evaporated at that moment as we knew we were going up.

I read Andy Warren's article this morning ranking best goals of the season. I agree with him that there are different ways to view goals and for me it is a mix of technical skills, being spectacular and what it meant for the match and our promotion chances, with a bias toward the latter.

Chaplin's breakaway goal at Derby (team play), Broadhead penalty against Port Vale (what it meant) and Chaplin's goal at Posh (Broadhead pass) all stand out.

But my go to bit of footage from the last season is the two minutes starting with Broadhead pass to Hirst which he screws wide of the post, Broadhead's header at the near post and then Hirst outmuscling and out running the Sheff Weds defence to put us two up. That goal put us in control of a game that would put us in control of our destiny, needing at most two points for promption. It was the point when it really felt we would get this done.

The irony is it is a route one clearance after Davis miscontrolled the ball, and pure strength and desire to get a shot on goal. None of our fancy team work, just good old desire. So for me, Hirst at Barnsley get's my vote.

One of my favourite things about Hirst's goal vs Barnsley was his celebration, he went absolutely mental! Just to see how much it meant to him was the icing on that particular cake

Hard to look past Broadheads free kick or Chaplin vs Derby for "best" goal of the season though.

Agree with this 100%. The agony/joy/relief experienced in the Port Vale game was, for me, like nothing I've experienced since the Bolton play off win. As was the case back then, after we came back and won I was finally convinced we were going up.

This might sound a bit boring to some..But Burgess towering header from a corner at Bolton, is also a favourite of mine..Simple goal, in many ways. But he just "wanted" it more, in the same way Hirst did for his at Barnsley.. And that Burgess goal to put us 2 up, was also a bit of a stress reliever at the time.. Tbf, I love all the goals... But the Hirst and Burgess goals are a bit of a throwback, to when " men were men", on the football pitch, and had to win more physical battles. There's just something I like about that...
He's been an absolute rock, on top of that. Easy to forget his horrific facial injury earlier in the season.

Okay so a bit of a weird one here - Edwards' first one V Cambridge.

I'm aware it was probably a fluke - but I was so pleased for him to finally score (and then get a second so soon afterwards). He's evidently a really nice person (as demonstrated by him using his post season free time to help with the soup kitchen the other night) and very popular in the dressing room - mainly because he laughs during virtually every sentence he says.

Also the goal pretty much sealed what (despite not being a derby in our eyes) was still a really good game to win against a team sat behind the ball for most of the game - and one we would have almost certainly have lost/drawn in the past.

I voted it goal of the season. Strong tussle, great recovery having been fouled, terrific finish. Addee to the timing and importance. Plus I think that being there and the nature of the win makes it the highlight game of the last 20 years for me.
