I'm sensing that there's quite a few people under the impression that the reason he hasn't signed a permanent deal, is of his own choice. Sorry to break it to you, but that couldn't be further from the truth, the guy had only played 40 something games in 3 seasons prior to joining us and was released by Middlesborough as he couldn't get anywhere near the side, having trained and not been offered any terms at other clubs in the Championship, it would have been mental to offer him anything more than we did. He is getting on now (in football terms) and simply isn't mobile enough for our style of play in the Championship, where the quality and speed/fitness of player is higher than league 1, this is typified by the sort of signings we make under McK. He simply isn't mobile enough to hack it at Championship level any more, certainly not without getting injured frequently and looking miles off the pace. He and Morsy had rings run round them last night by Port Vale in the midfield in that first half, through nothing more than the oppo having faster players.

He's been brilliant for us since he came in, but make no mistake, if Evans/Camara etc were fit, he'd be nowehere near the squad even now in League 1 for us, let alone the starting XI, or match day squad in the Championship. I don't think he'll be offered terms if we get promoted, possibly might get terms if we don't, but we'll be back in for Taylor and A.N. Other for the CM role regardless, so the outlook isn't great for him either way.

That aside, he still has a massive role to play for us in the next 4 games and he is absolutely critical to our midfield currently with all the injuries we have, I hope he finds himself part of a promotion achieving side this season.

Hence the reason he's been given a one year "thank you for last season" contract, we all know what's happening and he deserves it for his sterling efforts when we needed him most, but he'll not feature for us this season.

The man with nearly 200 Championship appearances under his belt is not going to be up to scratch for that division?

He's also only 30 years old, younger than Daryl Murphy in his 27-goal season, younger than David McGoldrick when he was playing in the Prem.

Who’s in a hole? You’re all looking very desperate to find something, but you know I’m right, the one year is a thank you gesture, nothing more.

Out of interest, if one were in a hole, surely they’re digging it for a reason and to stop digging would be the opposite of what they should do, you never see the hole picture.

I am sure that GC20 are not in the business of giving money away to anyone just as a thank you, if they were, why not say thank you to all the loyal fans and give them a free season ticket, Mass is obviously happy with a years contract otherwise he would not have signed it.

You can surely see from the evidence of last season that Luongo is streets ahead of Ball and Evans; and likely Camara too.

I got point you made badly previously that signing another back up midfielder longer term may not be best option, but Luongo showed with his performance levels that you can't let him out the door and he is the one who needs to be retained, not any of the others

The "thank you gesture" was his wages, that he got paid for playing.
The new contract is because we want him to play some more.

The club aren't in the business of giving away free money.

Well, rightly the club have been working on ensuring we are getting our house in order with existing players (Morsy and Chaplin) and then a quick win in Luongo.

I wouldn't be surprised to see KM sign a new contract and then we'll see some more activity in the next week or so.

That said, I suspect we will see a few leave before some come in.

I don’t know what the struggle with this concept is. Most people claim to understand signing Richard Keogh to play an amount of games you can count on one hand, by having his “influence and experience” around the team, same as offering Aluko a new contract, is he going to be a regular first XI player? Why then, is it difficult to appreciate that the club might feel that Mass hasn’t been sufficiently rewarded for his invaluable efforts getting us promoted by the very short contract he had with us and feel that he deserves a bit more from the club? No doubt he is a useful squad member, but he’s not in line for a starting role, or probably even the bench most weeks, when all the midfield are fit and available and we’ve most likely signed another CM during the window.

He was absolutely exceptional for us, we simply wouldn’t have had the run of wins without him, but I just don’t see him having anywhere near that sort of impact in the Championship and even the gaffer wants new CM’s, so he clearly has a vision of something different to Massimo in there. I can’t comment on the other midfielders, be interesting to see which of them return injury free and what McK decides to do with them, there’s a lot of them.

I don’t think Mass received the recompense deserved via the short term contract he had with us and knowing what I’ve seen of our manager and Ashton etc, I think they will have wanted to reward him and I believe that’s pretty much reflected by the one year offer, I am certain that Mass is not seen as a first XI starter, possibly not even in a match day squad if the other midfielders (and any new CM’s) are fit and available, but I’m glad he’s been offered a wage, it’s the right thing to do by the club, but not from a playing perspective, it’s deeper IMO.
