This bit was very telling:

'He then explains: “We want every day to be a learning experience for players, every day to be a challenge and that takes a lot of preparation.” He has a very receptive squad, eager to learn, with ten players at present doing their B licences. So McKenna holds meetings involving “best practice games” in which the squad review one of their own matches or significant others. [...] It gets them to be inquisitive about the details that make the difference. It develops curiosity. That’s part of the reason more players are interested in coaching.”'

He's appealing to the players' intelligence, not just basic skill, stength and "heart". They don't simply do things, or just understand what they're doing, but also why they're doing them. Which allows a lot more adaptability and on-pitch thinking.

Was also encouraged that McKenna wants to learn to sail - suggests he isn't in any hurry to be off for pastures new!

Before I click, does it include him 'inevitably' moving on to a 'bigger' club?
If so, I don't want to read it.

No not at all.

It reads like a manager who is very happy with life at the moment and is in no hurry to go anywhere…. And to be fair to Winter, he doesn’t even hint at it, but instead talks about the revival of a club steeped in tradition and the reconnection between the fans and the club again.

Great article thanks.

“For a young coach there’s so much to learn and ultimately you have to put your own slant on that, your own beliefs. I wouldn’t want to be an imitation. I want our own clear identity, our own style on the pitch. We’re really attacking, really aggressive and brave. I want football that’s exciting to watch and hard to defend against.”

I am loving McKennaball, in Kieran we trust. Its happening in Ipswich.

Indeed. And I'll be honest, if and when we get to the Premier League, we'd be far better off spunking our money on keeping McKenna here, rather than signing a Serini or a Finidi George to try and stay in the league.

Another part i liked.

“That history’s an inspiration. It shows everyone at the football club — myself, staff, players — what’s possible. The reason we get 30,000 crowds is the history of the club and the love of the club that is passed on from generation to generation. We’re now hopefully inspiring a new generation to come to the ground, enjoy the football and fall in love with the club again.”

I go with my teenage son and daughter. He always loved it, but the sheer fun at Portman Road, the positivity there from the club and other fans, thats what has hooked my girl.

And one of many pleasing things that McK brings is that he embraces our history and uses it as inspiration - and doesn’t hide from it or allow it to intimidate him (looking at you Lambert & Keane).

That's a good point. The history could be rather overwhelming - something too difficult to live up to where a manager is operating in the modern football world with perhaps constrained resources relative to our rivals, rather than a past golden age, idealised by the foreshortening of distance*.

Thus it may be pushed aside, in order for the new man to impose their own identity on the place. Which creates its own tensions, particularly with the fans (many of whom may have witness the glory era).

Ashton, McKenna and GC20 have done a superb job of syncretising the old and new, helped greatly by success on the pitch.

* Think of it like looking across a city. Only the tall or unusual buildings stand out, rather than the great mass of ordinary houses and shops.

Definitely need to be of a certain IQ, to truly fit into a KM team, and take on board the clever tactical side of things, with discipline , too..
Definitely why some players have seen the exit door, imo.. Likewise, why other players are , surprisingly to some, still here.
I think youngsters like Baggot and Humphrey's, definitely show a level of maturity and intelligence, that McKenna can work with. Looking forward to their progress. Even if it feels like a bit of a slow burn atm...

We need to find the slowest sailing coach in all of Britain, to pop down to Suffolk .

We’ve done it before. I remember a story where when Robson moved to manage England someone at the FA phoned Town to ask “is he really on *that* much?”

Fantastic article, lots of great press recently all adds to the feel good factor around the club.
Henry Winter added a couple of nice comments BTL as well:

thanks Simon, I went to the Wolves game to get a feel of what's happening at Portman Road, had a chat with fans, Ashton, local reporters who are always a good guide, and even with my own eyes I could see the improvements to stadium, team and belief. Good luck, and when I briefly pushed him on his ambition, his response was genuinely about commitment to Ipswich and building and building. As fans are pointing out, his intention to join a local sailing club signals he won't jump ship yet, if that's not mixing nautical metaphors. Good luck anyway. Would love it if Ipswich came back up.

An interesting and positive article. KM is obviously attracting lots of positive media and football interest and deservedly so. I don’t actually see a ceiling in how far he can go in the management game in the way that I could with say Mick or Joe Royle.

It should not be forgotten though, that McKenna is operating within a club structure the like of which we’ve never seen here. From the outside looking in it looks professional, organised and operating to standards that are the polar opposite to Evans’ approach. The pursuit of mediocrity on the lowest possible budget isn’t ITFC any more. All elements to the club are pulling in the same direction. That will take you a long way.

So yes, massive credit to KM, but also to the owners, Chairman, CEO and all the staff at the club. As I see it, there’s a heck of a long way to go and we haven’t achieved anywhere near what I think this club can yet. But we’ve made a cracking start.

I don't see McTominay having a future at Man Utd, the club will look for a big name to eventually replace Casemiro. As such, when / if we get back to the PL I see McTominay as a player KmK will be interested in

'You don’t have to go far from Ipswich to be in lovely countryside, Aldeburgh, Felixstowe, Southwold. I talked with my wife that it would be a shame to leave Suffolk without learning to sail. There’s some lovely boat clubs around.”'

It takes at least a decade to learn to sail to the sort of standard which you, I'm sure, will be setting for yourself, Kieran.

I do wonder the more I read about him how he doesn't struggle with burnout. 12 hour days, giving yourself a day off due to winning a promotion, setting aside half a day for family time a week.

I know some are just wired to work hard and succeed but him and Ashton seem workaholics. Good that his family are seemingly very understanding.

Analysing big Prem/European games with the squad is interesting.

Terrible article. It makes out McKenna is a brilliant manager that a number of top clubs might want to take from us, when the reality is we've fluked all our results and he definitely will not be worth for it for any club taking him from us at any point until we've won a shedload of trophies, by complete fluke.
