....supermarket and there was a gang of kids, probably all aged between 14 and 18 hanging around outside. Probably about 20 of them. They were all dressed head to toe in black, tracksuits and hoodies, not fancy dress. You just know that they are going to be causing chaos later. Imagine an old dear opening the door to that lot!?

We call it Guising up here, and it's been going on since the 16th Century. Guising is short for disguising yourself as an evil spirit and knocking on doors getting fruit and nuts.

Hmm, yes you can see how that happened, Scottish people being asked by a stranger if they have some fresh fruit, to eat, as a treat. Yep likely to be some evil afoot.

I remember my mother talking about going out guising when she was growing up in Scotland. In the States, this custom morphed into trick or treat. And the tradition of carving out pumpkins obviously has its roots in the carving out of turnips to make scary lanterns on Halloween.

Quite. Americans were running around in buffalo skins and getting in some early audition practice for Dances With Wolves when it was popular in Scotland and Ireland.

The name (properly Hallowe'en) is of Scottish origin; e'en being a Scottish contraction of evening. [Post edited 31 Oct 2023 21:30]

Halloween comes from the Celtic festival of samhain. October 31-November 1st. Was believed to be the night when the dead and otherworldly creatures rose and walked the earth. Was probably a orgytastic night of drink drugs and fire etc.Would have been celebrated in England,( the English were 'Celtic prior to the Roman invasion) Scotland, Wales and Ireland over 2000 years ago. Is especially linked with Ireland due to Oweynagat ( cave of the Cats Co,Roscommon) which was recorded in the 9-12C as being the place from where the otherworldly creatures etc descended from on samhain
