Here's why McKenna might be thinking seriously about leaving 13:10 - May 25 with 5654 viewsmylittletown

This is only a suggestion for debate, not a statement.

You have just achieved a miracle by getting a team of good League One players promoted to the Premiership. You know that you also got a bit lucky when Leeds, as usual, completely bottled it.
You are going to have to go through a major restructure of the squad, only two or three of whom stand much chance of becoming Premiership quality.
You have a CEO who has no experience of that role in the Premiership.
You are looking at a really tough season.
You feel that you have earned the right to at least talk to top half Premiership clubs who are not relegation candidates.

I don' want him to go, but I just can't see why people are so surprised, and are then saying that he has lost our trust etc etc.
It seems to me that here is nothing unreasonable going on.

The Leeds bottling it claim is the new Sheff Wed bottled it argument. In fact both teams did more than enough for automatic promotion it’s just that we did better.

No one gets lucky over a 46 game season - absolutely ridiculous to claim that.

It’s called the premier league, it’s not rugby. MA was CEO of Watford when they were promoted in 2006. Thanks for your research. Getting 96 points is not gaining from another team ‘bottling it’

Ashton’s held executive/director positions at at least 2 clubs in the PL. This is the third time he’s steered a team into the PL

It's a debate that isn't worth having with a 'supposed' fan who's first point is we were lucky after requiring 96 points to finish 2nd. Almost immediately marks you down as not genuine or a troll in my book.

If Leeds usually bottle it, then how is that lucky? Wouldn’t that just be classed as the norm?

A 'supposed' fan who has been going since 1967/68.

Leeds took 3 points from their last 4 games. Would you have bet on that? We had more bottle.

Such an odd take to bring Leeds into this. We had only six defeats, scored the most goals and came second. LUCK HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT.

On the flip side, he has built a team that has achieved record returns for second place in 2 consecutive seasons and achieved something quite remarkable through hard work, attention to detail and good backing.

He is confident he will have another successful season next year because he has got everything set up well. He doesn't listen seriously to all that "they will do well to finish above rock bottom" argument and knows his stock will rise much further and rapidly when people realise what he is still building here.

As an alternative he might have the chance to go and work for more money at a club that has not got any of that structure right off the pitch. He might speak to them and assess what they can offer him and balance it against what he has here.

If Man Utd manage to persuade him he is better off there than here, well done to them. If any other club mentioned so far can persuade him of that, I would be surprised.

But then again, Plymouth have just appointed Rooney so little does surprise me in football!

'... the squad, only two or three of whom stand much chance of becoming Premiership quality.'

Three things about this statement:

Firstly, we don't need all Prem quality players, we need a Prem-quality squad.

Secondly, loads of Championship and even League One/Two players make the step up to the Prem every year, bought by top-tier clubs.

Finally, Prem players are not all supermen in the mould of Erling Haaland (and even his form has dipped a little this season).

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

Going where? Elland road? Strange way to frame them in your original post and seem to have a bit of an obsession. So which part of our promotion was luck? The fact that we were better than Leeds?

So many weirdos or sensationalist national press types trying to put down out players as League One, at what point
do they become top quality Championship players having just finished the season on 96 points?! You're no better than Don Goodman!

This narrative of us being lucky having scored more goals than anyone else and bagging 96 points is frankly insulting and laughable.

We were lucky to finish ahead of Plymouth, though, as we couldn't do it just 12 months before.

Interesting how if something is said enough it becomes a fact. ‘You also know you got a bit lucky when Leeds, as usual, completely bottled it’. Lucky Ipswich. The Leeds, Norwich, Bristol City and others’ line.

We were not lucky in any shape or form. In a 46 game season we won 96 points. Leeds managed 90 and of those 90 beat us twice. They finished third, we finished second. The only luck in that division was Leicester not being docked points for ignoring the financial rules.

The players proved better than ‘good league one players’. That’s the Leeds and Norwich line again. 96 points and a plethora of brilliant goals says we had very good Championship players (many of whom were recruited as such) and an unknown number that could play in the PL.

As for the rest of it, see the many other threads and posts.

Instead of completely shouting this down like many of the posts I’m going to simply treat the post as a thought experiment. I expect many of the things outlined are exactly why Kieran’s advisors are looking at what might be. It’s their job. However we all know the way this has played out so publicly is to everyone’s distaste.
