Totally different "baggage" though? Ali has been out with a groin injury. How is that comparable with Williams' self-inflicted issues, unless I've missed something?

Not sure of in's and outs of course, but Ali hasn't just been injured, he's had a similar mentality issue over the years.

Besiktas wanted to cancel his loan and send him back. He only played 13 times as he wasnt up to the level. Why would you want him here other than cos you've heard of him and he was half decent for a couple of seasons 5 or more years ago? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I can't see how Alli's mentality would fit in with McKenna's demands, unless there's been a complete sea-change. I can't remember whether it came from him, or a pundit, but essentially he's taken the point of view that he can earn millions a year being a semi-decent player, so why waste time and effort to earn even more money that he couldn't possibly spend. I can't see that McKenna would give even a second look to a player who's happy to just plateau and pick up his paycheck.

Bare in mind people were happy to see Williams Return on 11:40 - Jun 30 with 2599 views | Churchman | He’s made 13 starts for Everton since 2021. Salary £100k a week. Personal issues, injuries. Now I’m sure he’s a really nice bloke and everyone likes a ‘turned his life around’’over his injuries now’ story. But as a newly promoted club, with limited funds by PL standards and operating to a set of standards re the people it employs why would you throw it all in the bin for a Dele Alli? Marquee signing? Played for England? Used to be a terrific player? Well so was Ray Crawford. At age 87 I’d sign him before Alli any time of the week. It’s a no for Williams too. However sorry I might feel for a player as an individual, let other clubs deal with it if we don’t have to. For what it cost us, that was a failure of a loan signing. Fine, that happens, but try not to repeat the mistake. I find it puzzling how star struck some people get over yesterdays news players, has beens etc. surely we are beyond that level of desperate inferiority aren’t we?

It's more discussing an upcoming free agent who's showed a determination to get back into the England squad. Now that may be a ridiculous dream, but only he knows. He may have been on 100k, he won't be on Monday and he won't get that again. It may and probably won't even be a thought of ours, but if we're happy to take a punt on a player who'd barely played football in 4 years due to numerous injuries, then I don't see an issue suggesting a player who's a good experienced age who may be able to prove his doubters wrong on a free, when as you say we have limited finances.

Ali has has well publicised issues off field that he has spoken about, Inc mental health battles and some others that may or may not have quite direct parallels depending on what BW stories you belive (I have no knowledge so can't add beyond the speculation that's out there)

Spurs offloaded him onto Everton who were totally mugged off. More fool them. Brilliant bit of business for Spurs, the agent and Alli who has taken and I hope is enjoying his dough. So he needs another meal ticket now the Everton gravy train has run out so out come the usual ‘over his injuries, sorted out his problems, the highlights reel, fitter than ever, hungry to get back his England place’ (more chance of Nelson getting his eye back). Why are Everton not giving him a new, reduced contract say at a measly £50k pw? Why are they not ‘taking a punt on him’? We all know why. He’s washed up. However with a bit of work, I’ve absolutely no doubt his agent will get him a lucrative deal somewhere because there’s always a club out there starry eyed and desperate enough to take a punt. I would just prefer it not to be us. [Post edited 30 Jun 2024 12:12]

Both were at their old clubs at the same time as Kieran McKenna! Not sure how much contact Alli would have had with him, though.

His alleged wanting to get back into the England squad doesn't quite tie in with Beşiktaş wanting to send him back early from his loan. If he's serious about getting back to top form, surely the best time to do that would have been whilst he had a contract which could be extended, rather than claiming, once he's a free agent, that he's a reformed character (honest guv) and just wants to get back to his best. A more cynical soul than me might be forgiven for thinking that such a change of attitude might only last until the ink is dry on his next contract, in the same vein as a certain Mr Bullard, formerly of this parish.

Guess im just rooting for him, to be brave enough to admit to rehab for addition and sex abuse as a child, I can understand why he's not been the Dele Ali we saw in his early day. Hopefully he can turn it around, it would be great for many to see that it's never to late.
