They've always been dicks about their campaigning. More interested in self-righteousness than persuading others.

I was friends with someone who worked for PETA in the 1990s and think that is a bit harsh.

Here, for example, is a recent example of their work which seems to me laudable, given the following from the news item.

"In 2023, more than 2.68 million animals were bled, poisoned, deprived of food, isolated, mutilated, or otherwise subjected to psychological suffering and physical pain in British laboratories. Millions more were bred and killed without being used – discarded as “surplus” because, for example, they were not of the desired sex or lacked certain disease characteristics."

Aren't the BBC getting the clicks and PETA just making potential donors think there are better animal rights charities to spend their money on?

They are a disgraceful outfit, often actually harming animals (and their owners) in order to make some wild point or other. Nothing wrong with the kind of action your link refers to, but they often don't stick to such legitimate means & causes.

Have lost the old links I had - this is the best round-up I could find - I remember some of the controversies well, the claims against PETA were justified.

Sounds like the author doesn't like them but to take just one of the issues mentioned, this is the PETA Uk view in relation to pets.

Talking about foxes, I saw one trot past my patio doors a couple of weeks ago with a pigeon in its mouth.

I must admit I had always thought they went for smaller prey such as mice and rats.

I had a fox run past me a few months ago with a baby fox in its mouth, was quite a sight. I imagined it was removing the cub from some kinda perceived danger rather then going cannibalistic

Taking pets from animal sanctuaries rather then giving money to breeders and encouraging the breeding of more pets is sound advice. We always get our dogs from sanctuaries (usually as puppies or young dogs). Never had a problem with um

I know, the anti-pet theory (in a less legitimate form) was rammed down our throats multiple times by a former (now banned) poster. And that article is the 'good' face of them that they choose to present for PR purposes.

The vast majority of pet owners are also animal lovers, and push just as passionately for responsible ownership - you'll see shedloads of us on social media, posters all over vets' surgeries etc. etc. advocating chipping, neutering, proper care etc.

None of us that are responsible & caring go in for the kind of disgraceful, unacceptable treatment that PETA has dished out to numerous animals and people though.

I've just come back from Spain, and near where I was staying is a couple who feed what would otherwise be stray cats.

They don't actually confine the cats and somebody tried to get a petition to stop them, but it turns out that they are authorised by the council to feed the cats, and have in recent years splayed and neutered getting on for 200 cats.

Without them there would be hundreds more cats, but no doubt JD Vance would disparagingly call the wife of the couple a childless cat lady as I don't think she has any children,

That's a good point, although hens tend to be an easy target given they can't fly.

Haven’t they always lost the plot? They always used to be linked with lots of horrible stuff: mass killings of animals, arson attacks against property and violence against people, etc. I’ve no idea if that’s different now but I always assumed they were cranks.

(Edit. I see that’s been raised already above, and yes that ties in with some of the things I remember about them).
