When premier league teams get set in their shape it can be very difficult to unpick, even for the best teams let alone us.
One important tool to help with this is the crossfield/diagonal ball out the the wing - we saw Bournemouth do this a lot to pick out Semenyo in space. The thing is that the ball needs to be drilled at pace AND pin point accurate, otherwise the defence just shifts across and the space is gone.
We saw Phillips do this a few times when he came on, and its something that our other midfielders don't see to really do, maybe Taylor is the one who does have the tools for it at least.
Lets park for now the fact the the players receiving the ball were off their game yesterday, if we can get more of that from Phillips it might give us an extra level when tackling those teams with tight defences. |  |

Would be have been nice in recent games against relegation rivals, instead of getting sent off etc.
Hard not to feel we learned a really hard lesson here. A shame as I was always a fan and thought he'd be perfect here. | |

I thought he looked classy when he came on. Admittedly Newcastle had relaxed their game by then but he pinged the ball about and seemed to make time for himself.
Has to be remembered that he was having a good game when last on the field against Leicester and I really can't make out why he hasn't been used since then. |  | | |

Trouble with judging the 2nd half was Newcastle could have put their youth team out, the game was over by HT.
Newcastle almost approached it as a training exercise, simply sat back more, with the aim of letting us have the ball and when/if we lost it they hit it quickly to the wings. Then they made some subs who added some more energy.
I do agree we need to move the ball a lot quicker than we did yesterday. Too many times we got the ball and tried to move it slowly across the pitch via 4 or 5 passes, allowing Newcastle time to press. Whereas Newcastle mixed it up, with some similar passing moves interspersed with quick long passes across the pitch to stretch us. |  | | |

To be fair, come the end of todays fixtures, we can still be 4 points from Safety with 21 games to go.. and fingers crossed the gap doesn’t open too much between now and new year, and we can strengthen and get some of the injured players back. So still plenty of time for

McKenna made some comment about Phillips having had a full weeks training this week. I suspect he’s been injured.
Regard to KP yes, of course he’s a PL player. Phillips is immensely talented and in flashes you can see why he made the England side. But he’s not that player now. Can he do it week in week out? Doesn’t look like it. Could you build a team around him? On talent yes in every other respect no. Does he truly want it? Only he knows that.
For me (possibly controversially), he’s been our poorest signing. Whatever his problems have been it’s about delivery. Has he done so? Not for me. Will he contribute second half of the season? We need him to but he looks to be ‘one of those’ where for whatever reason his best years are behind him. Lucky I’m usually wrong!!

…he’s been injured and was harshly adjudged to have been sent off and subsequently suspended. Prior to that he was getting match fit. To write him off is non-sensical. He’s a classy footballer and will have a big second half of the season I’m sure. He starts against Chelsea. No brainer.

Morsy suspension no doubt means your wish will be granted next game, hopefully with Taylor makeing a midfield three.

It was really starting to click and then suspension and injury. Forget the money. Honestly forget it. He's just one of our squad members now. A very good one. Nothing he can do about injury.
I do wonder whether we just unleash him and Cajuste now. I know how important Morsy is but Phillips and Cajuste is a really strong duo. | |
