Missed out on Doak, Ali's move breaks down, Edmundson recalled so he can be sold, and now Julio Enciso on loan. I am sad to see Edmundson go, as I expected him to be able to do a job for us next season if we drop down. I don't want to be negative about a new player, but I never much rated Enciso and thought he was far too lightweight for the Premier League, and has an injury history. I'd say our squad is already a bit too much on the smaller side, and we have our own players with ongoing injury issues (such as Hirst and Axel). Hopefully, he will come good for us and McKenna can get the best out of him and the move proves me wrong.

We have needed another good striker in the mold of Hirst/Delap for a number of windows now and seemingly keep failing to get our man. It's very frustrating, if Delap was to get injured we'd be absolutely stuffed.

Problem is Delap/Hirst style strikers are like gold dust, not many around, and then you have the issue of cost, asking someone to come to be back up to Delap, it's a tough sell and an expensive deal to do.

Edmundson can only be sold to Boro this month.

I still find it mad that we put Edmundson on at Man City when it was always likely he was going out on loan. Appreciate the sentiment of it and that he's a local etc, but with the 2 club rule its a bit unnecessary IMO. We've put a recall in to the loan but we can't sell him to anyone else in this country (well we can, but he can't play for them), and his contract is up in the summer, so we don't really have much leverage. Maybe we can get him a move back north of the border?

I'd say we hold no leverage! Unless we are genuinely happy to pay Edmundson's full wages and let him sit outside of the squad not playing for 6 months. But McKenna wouldn't allow that as it would be a sh!t way to treat a player that has been part of our rise and given us a lot off the pitch as well as on it.

I suspect we were in a bit of a corner, if we didn't recall him in the contractual window we would've lost any leverage. As it is we've maybe retained a smidgen, if Boro want him back to help them get promoted then they'll need to buy him. But we've also inherited the risk of forgoing any contribution they were making in his loan arrangement. Perhaps we're confident we can find him a club outside of the English leagues where the 2 club rule doesn't apply?

….for him.

Otherwise it’s a pretty shoddy way to treat someone who has done so well for us over our “growth period”.

Really hope it works out well for him.

Yeah, a slightly odd situation. And given the reported sums we've been offered (appreciate we'll never know the full in and outs of the deal), I'm surprised we've not taken it given he can walk away for nothing in 6 months whilst we also pay his wages for that period.

The leverage is if Middlesbrough want him for the second half of the season, they will need to up their offer. They have bid £350k + more if they go up.

He has been a regular for them all season, why would they not increase their offer to keep a key member of the team, that has got them into a play off position?

It was our last day to be able to recall him, to focus Middlesbrough in discussing a fee, rather than them having him for the remainder of the season, with no leverage.

Maybe but unless it is Rangers or Celtic I can't imagine he would be keen when he can get the financial benefits of being a free agent and a choice of clubs in the Championship in the summer.

I don't think it's just the English leagues for the 2 club rule - pretty sure it's all leagues that are in sync with us so he could maybe go to the US.

If he's in Boro's longer term plan then they won't want him to become a free agent when other clubs might tempt him with a bigger signing on bonus in the summer. Probably be cheaper for them to go slightly higher now on the transfer fee. Suspect a deal gets done in the not too distant future with them.

The three-club rule is a FIFA one, so can't move abroad either.

Indeed, is a FIFA rule. Negotiations have been ongoing, two bids turned down, both parties sticking to their valuation, so Town utilised their recall when the date came up. They won't want him to stay here and not play as his wages for the rest of the season on top of the fee turned down would probably end up totally something approaching £1.5 million

They're surely not far apart though you would think, he was only recalled due to timings.

They've upped that to £500,000 plus £350,000 and further bits. I think the other thing from their perspective is getting him longer term. In the summer he can go elsewhere and other clubs are keen and then able to make him offers.

In terms of Town's outlay on players over the last couple of windows, it's peanuts. Had they wanted to, I think the recall date could have been moved back a week or so.

Oh I agree, it's just been many windows of chasing and having to settle for Ahadme/Ali type of signings which have not worked out.

I'm hardly an expert on transfers, but the original £350k + add-ons seems ridiculously low to me, cheeky try-on, quite insulting.

Surely worth at least £1m + add-ons?

Out of contract in a few months, when he will go on a free and can't go anywhere else this window, so Town not in a particularly strong position, other to deny Boro a player they want.
