Fifty-two per cent of Gen Z – people aged between 13 and 27 – said they thought “the UK would be a better place if a strong leader was in charge who does not have to bother with parliament and elections"

I think it highlights that democracy is failing the general public on the whole.
To many people are becoming disengaged with politics nowadays. It's no real surprise with the blatant corruption/cronyism and blurred lines between parties that been evident for the last couple of decades. Add that to diminishing living standards, public amenities being sold of to private companies for penny's, then still being propped up by the public, endless enquiries but recommendations not being enforced etc, etc, etc. it's understandable why people have become disenfranchised.
The only way to win these people over is politicians need to be better. The public gets what the public wants. If it doesn't improve people will want change. Brexit proved people are willing to cut their nose off too spite their face, when they don't feel they're being listened to.
BTW, just to confirm I am all for democracy and understand how awful most dictatorships usually end up. As already posted by someone above, they work well with a great leader but don't normally end well as a wrong 'un usually ends up 'finding' their way into power. |  | | |

An absolute monarchy is another option. Again, you're in the lap of the gods whether you get a good monarch or not. Bhutan was pretty happy under their old king, who himself decided that they would move to a parliamentary system. They only did that in 2008. |  |

Not a fan of generalising an entire generation, as a millennial we largely faced the same accusations of laziness, naivety, and entitment. My experience of Gen z is they just have that idealism that you lose as you get older! Perhaps a field trip to Russia would focus minds!

We noticed in Ipswich town centre for the last couple of weeks there's been a group distributing communist literature. Might not be the sort of dictatorship we are talking about here but it's still another form of authoritarianism. I felt like asking them if they were aware that the hammer and sickle flag they were sporting is responsible for at least as many deaths as the Swastika, but decided against as I didn't need the aggro of a "that was the wrong sort of communism" or "but what about neoliberalism" type conversation.
Anyway, point my wife made, and she is much less interested in political conversations than I am: "why are they always young people, and why do they always seem like they need a shower?"
I guess the idea of surrendering all personal responsibility for meeting your needs to the state or some form of dictator is appealing to a lot of people. We saw how easily this happens during Covid. |  |
