Correct. I was staring at that thinking 1) that doesn't look like the Cobbold Stand in the rear and 2) where's the segregation fence. But whatever the photo, I do still miss the old North Stand!!

Yes, I miss them both too. Mind you, they had to be replaced really. Just a pity acoustics were not taken into account when the new (now 24 years old!) North Stand was done.

Nice pics. I think the pitch invasion ones are the 3-1 Brighton game in 1992 last game after we’d won the second division. The four pictures from Churchmans were taken not too far from where we used to stand. Great day. The first picture - a season or two earlier?
Who misses the old North Stand? on 16:57 - Mar 24 with 2731 views | OldFart71 | Used to stand half way up the North stand with my dad in the late fifties, early sixties. The Cobbold Stand was the old chicken run that ended up at the foxhall stadium. The original Cobbold in your photo had wooden sleepers as steps, but were possibly changed due to the Bradford fire ? Back in the day a sell out crowd meant fans being placed around the outside of the pitch. I'm not sure whether the person shouting Golden Goal was the same chap who used to sell the Evening Star. He was a chap of the name Dieter Ager who lived in Mendlesham, he always wore a flat cap and wore it on one side. There were a few Germans around Mendlesham, I guess they were held during the war and then married afterwards. As a teenager we used to roam around and Mendlesham was an American airbase. On one of our days out and about we came upon a nissen hut that the Americans would have lived in and on one of the walls was a drawing of an Indian in full headdress sitting on an American aircraft bomber. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Should have said the original Churchmans had wooden sleepers for steps.

2nd row of barriers, 3 along was ‘mine’. It was just the right height to lean on when I was stood on my milk crate. I was a child by the way, not vertically challenged.

I believe the first photo is from May 1987 on the last day of the season (before the Play Offs started) when we drew 1-1 against Reading.

Ta for that. Certainly looks about right. Do like the old scoreboard on the NS roof. Happy memories, even if the football was a bit rubbish at that time.

That was the season when Town didn't concede a single League goal when defending the North Stand end all season.

Who misses the old North Stand? on 19:04 - Mar 24 with 2408 views | ArnieM | Me. I miss the NS. They totally killed the atmosphere when they revamped that stand. In the old NS it absolutely bloody rocked and was deafening when we all sang as one. What also helped was away fans for a period of time were also in the stand. I think k the original NS housed something in the region of 9k fans. I hope at some point before I start pushing up daisies, that the club takes another look at the now SBR because it could be improved.

Didn't those wooden steps start from about half way up the stand? I remember each year The Ipswich Schools Sports day used to be held on the hallowed PR pitch. It felt awesome to be running for your school on the pitch where your hero's played every Saturday ( therefore clearly well before sky tv !)

The corrugated metal wall at the back of the North Stand was already bent when I kicked it. Top of the North, in the east corner. Felixstowe Posse.

Who misses the old North Stand? on 04:39 - Mar 25 with 2031 views | Benters | I was a late comer to football, tbh I never liked it much at school.5 a side was ok and my team won a trophy, but I always preferred cross country running and cycling, probably because I knew I was better at that than football. But around 1990 I was working on a building site and one of the bricke’s was a season ticket holder and he would get free tickets every now and then,he got two and I took my niece who was around 7 at the time. We watched from Churchman’s and we kept looking at the old NS it looked great fun,so the next game we decided to go and watch Town play Blackburn Rovers,Shearer was playing and getting a lot of stick we both loved it and that was that I was hooked.

The nearest claim to fame I had was playing a Scout football final on the practice pitch, but Bobby Robson did pop in to the dressing room which was nice.

When I first went to football with my friends (as a 9 year old) we used to get to into Churchman's as soon as it opened, which I think was either 1.15 or 1.30. At that age, we enjoyed the excitement of the build up. [Post edited 25 Mar 11:52]

It's definitely either the 1986/87 1987/88 season or 1988/89 season. Im pretty positive that's me top left where I stood every game on my lonesome :( Being slightly weird I got to the game early just to stand there. Funny how I still visually remember so much from that spot. Atkinson Hat-trick, Brennan's pen & Balthacha's debut where we won 5-1 (with all the goals coming in the second half at the Churchman's end) automatically come to mind. Pure TWTD stuff Then I made some friends & they convinced me to switch over to the North Stand where even more memories were made.

So am I! Nabbed a bit of turf too. There is a bit of my garden that’ll forever be Portman Road x2. Did the same after the Bolton game. Shocking! Would have done the same last May but I’m not sure Mr Ashton would have been too pleased, given the semi-artificial nature of it. [Post edited 25 Mar 13:35]

Great way for Cooper to finish his last season for us. Funnily enough the last time he actually played at Portman Road in a Town shirt he not only kept a clean sheet, he also saved a penalty. Although that was at the Churchman's end.

Yes frowned on I now but what a time we had! Yes I know all those people who never experienced the tribalism will say how bad it was and you couldn’t take your family or children to football , guess what , I didn’t care. Before you get all sanctimonious it was a different time. I
