Club World Cup 20:03 - Mar 26 with 3069 viewsberkstractorboy

Just read on BBC that City and Chelsea could earn upto £97M each from the Club World Cup this summer. It's nuts and with PSR it just makes the playing field even more uneven between clubs in the PL let alone between the Prem and Championship.

They need to look at this and say any winnings can't be used as profit in the PSR calculations or something along those lines as the reality is the club world cup is really only achievable by very few in UK who are already very wealthy.

I know what I propose may not be totally right but it's the principle behind it that I think is important to contain the increasing gulf in clubs finances.

Guardiola has told City players to treat it like a mix between pre season friendlies and a holiday.

He's probably just getting his excuses in early but if every team takes that attitude it's going to be a pretty dull competition.

Truly impaired.

I guess the further you progress the more prize money you win so am sure Pep's bosses want him to take it more seriously!

The whole thing is a joke when FA cup replays have to make way for sh1t like this and Villa playing mid-season friendlies in Dubai

How come Chelsea are in this club world cup, is it Europa performance?

I think that might make it quite fun.

Both qualified due to recent Champ League wins

It's like they make this up to have whoever has agreed secret deals to join a European Super League!

I guess qualification is over a 3 year cycle essentially, even though Chelsea have been pants for a few years

The teams not participating will probably be happy their players aren't picking up injuries

The more money the top teams earn, the more it’ll be wasted on inflated transfer fees or wages. A player worth £70M and earning £200k pw will suddenly be worth £100M and earning £300k pw.

Especially frustrating that is the case, when the FA Cup replays they’ve got rid of can often be a much needed boost or even lifeline to clubs much lower down the food chain.

I've recently declined a ticket for the Manchester City v Juventus in Orlando. A friend's brother who is a season ticket holder at the Etihad is flying over and will be there for the second year in a row. I went with the family last year for the City v Barcelona pre-season friendly which cost me $100 (less than the actual ticket price) but will not 'justify' it for another !!

Absolutely right. I used to love the FA Cup, a wonderful competition which is part of the tradition of football in this country. It has now been diminished to cup of reserve sides, as the money for the big teams is now all in the Premier League, European competition, and now these type of global 'showcase' matches engineered so the big teams play each other all the time. The majority of English football league clubs, which are part of the fabric of society, are sidelined and sometimes left to go out of business.

It’s not just the football league sides… doing away with replays from the 1st round onwards impacts quite a few non-league sides that are still in the competition at that stage… when the ‘big boys’ don’t even come into it until the 3rd round anyway.

What about the mighty team from Europe - RB Salzburg?

Google/AI told me this

Red Bull Salzburg are one of a dozen UEFA teams competing in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup and qualify as the ninth-best ranked eligible team in the four-year ranking.

Says it all really. Don't worry very soon it will be the European super league they always wanted with a different name.

It's worse than I thought reading the BBC article, as 'Money awarded for participation is weighted by a ranking based on sporting and commercial criteria'.

Commercial criteria!!

A bit like a league where the winner has been determined in March and the bottom three are already down!

To make you feel even worse, prize money in this new fake World Cup depends on where you're from, so European sides get a lot more than, say, African sides at each stage.

(UEFA competitions run similarly, large v small countries)...

No ones mentioned yet the 2 special transfer windows that the teams participating enjoy. Watch for prince clown Ronaldo joining a side just so he can enjoy a showdown with Messi

Players and managers moan about the busy schedule but no doubt the clubs they play for lap up the extra money gained. I saw the other day that some Prem teams already have end of season matches lined up over seas!

As Hoppy says, non-league clubs are left struggling financially from the impact of no replays in the FA cup (probably the only real way any of these clubs can generate prize money) so that the elite clubs can partake in pointless friendlies for cash.

Add in the extra games in Uefa competitions, this extended club world cup, larger qualifying groups in International tournaments, a pointless nations league etc etc, yet its the traditional FA cup that has to suffer.

Still not as bad as Inter Miami qualifying purely because they have Messi!

Yes players “tired” after8 games in the Premiership and even the England manager saying players need a rest.
Strange how that melts away when there is a sniff of money.

This Tournament is all that is wrong with football. Their killing it. There is too much on as it is.

I'm hoping I don't get sucked into watching it as I don't want to. We can just hope it massively flops.

Weren't teams threatened if they didn't play their proper teams?

However these teams don't do themselves any good when moaning about too many games and end up at "end of season" tours around Australia/China etc.

It's a near pointless competition. Football doesn't need more competitions, it actually needs fewer competitions & this is another part of FIFA's attempt to keep control of the game. The big European clubs are the threat so their solution is to throw more money at them.

I don't think it needs fewer competitions, it just needs to have sensible inclusions.

The Champions League should be the previous holders plus the domestic winners of European leagues only, and where the holder also wins their domestic league, 2nd place from that league qualifies. Simples.

Europa League should be the 2nd and 3rd placed teams from European domestic leagues.

Conference dropped.
