Referee Gerald Ashby - R.I.P
And Brian Moore
Once sat next to him at Surrey vs Essex in the Natwest Trophy QF in '91 when Waqar Younis ripped through the Essex middle order . . . he was a lovelyl chap.

Thompson's Southend Stunner4th Apr 2020 09:00 Southend United were meant to be the visitors to Portman Road on Saturday, which coincidentally is the 28th anniversary of the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Shrimpers at Roots Hall in which Neil Thompson scored a brilliant and hugely important last-gasp winner as Town continued their pursuit of the Second Division title. TWTD spoke to the former left-back to hear how he remembers that day, that season and his time at Portman Road.17

I was in the home seats, guests of a friend of the ex wife which included going into the players lounge afterwards.
I was absolutely battered and remember trying to talk to Mick Stockwell who I just remembered looking terrified and scanning the room for a way out.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
I was thinking yesterday about Thompson when someone here mentioned that very few Town players could hit a ball harder than Thompson.
It's funny the enormous discrepancies in how full players' Wikipedia pages are.
Neil Thompson's career is reduced to this:
Neil Thompson (born 2 October 1963) is an English former professional footballer who played as a defender. He played for Scarborough, Ipswich Town and Barnsley amongst others. [...] Whilst at Barnsley he played in the 1997–98 Premier League with the South Yorkshire club, appearing in three matches as a starter.
(The statistics are there too, of course, - including 242 games for Scarborough and 206 for Town.)

"We want Jobson out".
They were being rather ungrateful, given that Jobson took over the chairmanship with Southend then at what they thought was rock bottom, narrowly avoiding having to apply for re-election & close to extinction, with debts of £700,000 after the Anton Johnson fiasco. Interestingly, Jobson saved Southend by borrowing money from such luminaries as Robert Maxwell & Ken Bates! The fans got their wish when Jobson sold the club to an even more dubious Essex property developer, Martin Dawn.
