Craft beer has disappeared up its own generic arse 19:20 - Aug 22 with 990 viewsredrickstuhaart

Fight me on this....

Currently sampling a series of craft beer joints in Harrogate prior to trundling over to Preston in the morning.

Bar 1. Nice place. Friendly, relaxed, keen to offer samples of everything. 14 items on the draft list 2 of which are cask ales. Of the first 12 9 are ipa pale ale of some description. NINE! Then there's a radler and 2 pils lagers. The cask stuff? A session ipa and a pale ale... Not a proper ale or anything other than ipa to be had, basically.

Bar 2. Lots of ipa.... Also some wheat beer. Hooray! However, each of the 4 wheat beers has fecking fruit in it. Why? No ale. Nothing Belgian or proper weissebeer styles. Just ipas.... The same endless slop that comes in overly colourful cartoony cans in the supermarket.

So it's lager again.

Seek cask ales, not craft ales. Trust me.
You'll thank me when you're as old as me.

I am well aware of the virtues of cask ale. What I don't get is a place putting on two casks and making them fecking ipas to add to the other 9 on the menu!

Blackfriars in Yarmouth. Eastern Region CAMRA pub of the year his year.
10 real ales including 2 from it's own brewery. 4 Dark beers. 60+ real ciders, 120 bottled and draft Belgian beers.
It's grim but I manage to cope. But what to have next ?

An old pale of mine who grew up on a choice of Holt's mild or bitter, when faced with a choice like this, used to ask ' have you owt brown?'

Reminds McSorley's in New York. They only do light or dark beer. Both excellent.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

I blame social media.

Was one of those establishments the Harrogate Tap by any chance?

Not been there. North bar and cold bath brewery

I used to be into craft beers but, quite frankly, I swerve them now. I find that after a couple my palate becomes 'blind' so revert back to something more normal. Somewhere like North Bar in Leeds works well in respect that its possible to have a drink thats different but not too ' crafty.'

The tap did have some reasonable craft beers, but I'm going back a few months now, so it's possible it's no better now than the two places you've tried

If it helps, IPA and pale ale are different styles. And most variants of both of them taste subtly different to each other depending on the hops and malt used.

On the other hand, all lagers taste the same. Fight me on it 😉

Go to Prague. Have a properly fresh well poured Urquell and come back to me...

they might not have the choice on what beer styles theyve got, and they might not have the beer knowledge to go with it thesedays.

I mean even in the best cask bars, it infuriated me earlier in the summer during the heatwave, when I kept going to this pub and they only had stouts/best bitters on. and youre like surely to god youve thought most people want to drink golden ale when its hot, but I can almost guarantee come autumn and winter, theyll have a board of light refreshing golden ales on.

Great pub. Great beers anyway. Always a friendly welcome, but possibly a bit lacking in atmosphere?

'Craft beer' or whatever you want to call it used to be decent. Now it seems to have turned largely into alcopop.

Tiny Rebel are a good example. They used to brew some decent beer, now it's all flavoured crap bar the odd one like Hadouken.

I prefer decent continental pilsners or wheat beers these days as they have more body to them than the flavoured or over diluted crap most craft breweries churn out. Ale has also remained decent if kept well, a nice bitter or strong ale is a thing of beauty.

I occasionally find a decent IPA and I'll say bottle condition Proper Job is still cracking. Most of the time it's just the same hazy, bland nonsense over and over again though (so not even fitting in the real IPA style either).
