Reform are dangerous - pt. 2,675,823 08:30 - Aug 26 with 6409 viewsZx1988

Had the 'pleasure' of listening to Zia Yussuf (remember him? He's the one who originally tried to resign from Reform because they were too racist, but was somehow convinced by Führage to stay...) trying to defend Reform's new immigration policy on R4 this morning.

It's scary how much of their rationale doesn't even stand up to the most basic of scrutiny, but will no doubt be lapped up by their target demographic.

For example, claiming that immediate deportation of illegal immigrants will reduce the burden on the NHS, pensions, and welfare system. My understanding was that, by virtue of their being illegal migrants, they wouldn't even be able to access pensions or the welfare system?

Swiftly followed up by "we'll pay the Taliban £2.5bn to take back migrants"...

*face-palm*

I live close to one of the asylum seeker hotels that have been in the news for anti-immigration protests recently. The rhetoric spouted on local facebook pages is getting worse and worse. And even if some of the supports can claim that they are "just concerned about local women and children", they are empowering those with the worst views to speak and act out in abhorrent ways.

There was a swastika spray painted onto the pavement on my way to work this morning, as an example.

Over 40% of those arrested in the "race riots" in 2024 have been reported to the police for prior domestic abuse.

But the problem is illegal immigrants.

They constantly pump out lies, insinuation and the like without recourse. They’re get far too much media coverage and no one questioning them.

They’re fact they just ape the worst of MAGA means we need to combat it. I’m genuinely amazed the security services aren’t/haven’t gone in on Farage - he’s now testifying in America about how we have no free speech apparently! What a patriot

Same here - constant wittering on about repeated violence and sexual offences against women and girls, yet never able to back it up with reports from the local press.

If they were so concerned about the wellbeing of children in particular, surely they'd be spending a good amount of time picketing churches as well.

The problem is also the p*ss weak interviewing on R4. You can get away with anything if you'll commit to the "I'll just talk over you" strategy.

And it's hard to have a genuine discussion around the topic because the moment you concede on any point they may have, it is used as ammunition to support the worst elements of their policy.

There is a world of difference between "current levels of legal and illegal migration are too high" and "we should let/cause those who make channel crossings sink and drown", but many will take the first statement as support for the second statement.

That is a real problem because reform of the immigration and asylum system is needed. There was an article in the economist a couple of months ago which ended with the statement that "if the progressives of the world don't create a better system, the populists of the world will create one which is far worse". I feel that statement could be applied to many facets of modern life.

And the press in general. These supposed race riots that have been "exploding" all over the country are smaller than our local WI coffee morning. It's almost as if large sections of the press (worryingly now including the BBC) are trying to stoke unrest.

They have mastered the art of the soundbite, which is reinforced in the internet echo chambers of facebook, instagram and tiktok, which fuels further hatred built on lies and misinformation.

I genuinely worry for the future state of politics in this country, and the rise of hatred based on race and nationality.

I know there has been a lot of jokes about flags etc, but anyone who studied history knows how flags and other genuine emblems of national representation can be misappropriated and used to fuel hatred.

Part of me feels we are not that many steps away from a type of "Kristallnacht" in this country where the buildings won't be Jewish shops and housing, but wider immigrant housing and refuge centres.

Alongside, which seems to be a new development this weekend, running the line that the government could temporarily suspend Art. 8 ECHR, presented with little or no critical comment.

absolutely this. we need to have a proper reform of the system and it is made much harder by what is going on currently. careful legal reform and hysterical public debate don't go together well.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

The big issue is we don’t hear from say the Greens or Lib Dems et al because they don’t offer the same soundbites etc

While I may or may not agree with those other fringe parties it’s pretty criminal how disproportionate their voice is in British politics because of the media.

When they talk about fracking or other American influenced environmental damage, having the greens to counter them would be more effective, as they can’t just dismiss them as being the government etc

Asylum seekers receive £49.18 per week to live on. If they have meals provided at their accommodation that amount is reduced to £9.95. Obviously they have no access to pensions because they are not working and have not contributed. If their claim is successful and they go into the job market then they are entitled to the old age pension, the amount which will be dependent on how much they have contributed.

Obviously they would have full access to the NHS whilst waiting on the decision to stay

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

I'm sure we can make an agreement with somewhere like Eritrea to take all the people arrested for violence and attacking the police at anti-immigrant demonstrations.

Would have the added advantage of educating them on what caused many of these people to flee their homes in the first place.

it is a common theme, Reform trip out constant lies and the old "I believe that....." Then it all becomes fact in the eyes of their followers who do dot listen to what is actually said and repeat the narrative as fact, which it rarely is.
Like the recent quote on fracking from a report that shows huge benefit to the economy and thousands of jobs, but Reform refuse to show journalist's the actual report. My assumption to this is that they are once again lying or they would happily produce the report.
I'm sure this particular policy has nothing to do with donations from big oil companies.

1.8m people voted for them in the last General Election, 6.4% of the votes cast. Vastly more than the SNP*, who seem to get a lot of attention.

* Admittedly regionally limited.
