Unfortunately premier league ready players are already in or about to sign for premier league clubs. Delap and Omari are further evidence of this. Hopefully a few more of this group will be premier league ready next season if we get back because more wholesale changes next summer if we go up will almost certainly lead to another year of struggle in 26/27.
Relegation of all 3 promoted teams two seasons running and it being likely that at least 2 of the 3 will do the same this season shows just how hard it is nowadays to build a team. It’s a shame. | |

Well ... maybe.
Ashton spoke about the huge step up in physicality demanded as you step up to the PL, and us not really being ready for that. So we were shifting to prioritising this more highly.
That doesn't necessarily mean we were looking at players who have played their careers in the PL. Merely that they'd (theoretically) be able to step up as they had a higher ceiling in whatever physical attributes they needed.

It's probably not an easy sell saying come to Ipswich where we have (on paper) three very high quality full backs already.
We were never going to sign a top level full back to come and sit on the bench. It's a very solid depth signing. [Post edited 28 Aug 10:53]

I do think there has to be an element of that and the right balance. Tomorrow never comes, its all very well investing in players with big potential but sometimes you just need proven quality who know their way around the division, even if its a bit less sexy.
Looking beyond this season as well Townsend is out of contract and probably leaves after a serious injury, Young is 41 and out of contract and probably goes. Woolf probably goes if not before. Kipre joins if we go up, maybe doesn't if we don't. We're back to 5 or 6 defenders, we'll need some stability and continuity regardless of the league we're in. |  | | |

Agree with this. We're still recalibrating the squad from the league 1 days- we need stronger cover and a better bench for future attempts in the prem.
The best is a mix of both- we still need the young talent to develop and bring in the funds to escalate the rest of the squad. |  | | |

None of those three were in League 1 (and with a rotten infrastructure throughout the club) the year before, so you're not comparing like with like.
Leeds, especially, are streets ahead of where we were in terms of Prem readiness. We were victims of our own (too quick) success. |  |

Any idea of recruiting a squad which can reasonably be expected stay in the Prem while just having been relegated back to the Champ was always pie in the sky.
We don't have the draw or, despite parachute money, the funds to attract that kind of player. It's why we couldn't keep hold of Delap or Hutchinson. At best we can get borderline people like Cajuste (who could be up to the standard, but not nailed on, just a loan if we don't go up), veterans like Young, or ambitious top-end second tier/overseas men who can't get directly into a Prem squad.
In any case, as you mention, we have a Championship campaign to contest first. No point in acquiring beautiful footballers who can't break down a low block or take a crunching tackle.
Some things said have led to a lot of loose thinking on where we are in relation to transfer possibilities and attractiveness this summer. In the process devaluing what have been some pretty decent acquisitions at this level. We could only have dremt of signing the kind of players we are now during the grinding years in the Champ before we went down to L1. |  |

Leeds have spent three of the last five seasons in the Prem. Burnley had a run of six years there before yo-yoing for the last three. Even Sunderland were a pretty established top-tier side 10 years ago, albeit having crashed down to L1 after that. | |

I think it’s much more likely one of the promoted teams stays up this season.
With Wolves, Brentford and Bournemouth having sold all their best players and West Ham seem even worse than they were last season I think one or more if those teams gets relegated.
We weren’t good enough last season not trying to pretend otherwise but I think some of the so called established teams are weaker than last season and don’t seem to be bringing in players of similar quality.
Hence the reason Wolves are turning down the crazy money Newcastle have offered for Larsen, they know to lose him as well will really hurt thier chances of not getting relegated. Personally I think he’s pretty average and not worth half that amount. | | | |
