It always amuses me that people like Streeting and Alan Johnson, who were born into abject poverty set aside dogma in order to improve the lives of the less well off. Whilst the middle class Islington set who know nothing of real poverty are the zealots who put dogma above solutions.

This is a very sensible post, Sitters. I'm no Starmer fan by any means but we've got to stop changing PMs every 18 months. If Starmer goes then in the last decade we'll have had 7 different PMs and those PMs will span a period of just 16 years in total (and 7 of those years were taken up by David fecking Cameron). The 7 PMs prior to that span a period of 50 years going all the way back to Ted Heath. It's nae normal as Dope Paul III would say. You can't get anything done when you're changing leaders this regularly.

It’s like the Watford managers job ffs. I appreciate not everyone will like whoever is elected, that’s natural, but can’t keep calling for their heads every ten minutes. I suppose that’s society these days though, if the person you don’t like is in then you want them out asap, again can refer to a football manager. Labour won the election by a landslide didn’t they? And ever since all I’ve seen is hate for Starmer.

Yes, you are. Whenever anyone disagrees with Streeting's politics you always desperately make it about social class. Nobody else is wanging on about his upbringing and the political differences people have with him are nothing to do with his background. It is, frankly, a pathetic attempt to stifle legitimate disagreement with his politics. No offence, but when a lifelong Tory is a supporter of his it's not much of a stretch to think that people on the left might not be keen because of his politics rather than because of his background. Try dragging your discourse up from the gutter for a bit, yeah?

As a Labour voter out of necessity but not historically, who do you think would be better? Streeting or Burnham? I’ve never warmed to Streeting but have no idea what his vision for the Party would be. Burnham seems more genuine and seems to be delivering in Manchester, but again I’m not au fait with his vision. Obviously I’m aware it’s left v right of the Party, but that doesn’t matter to me. I just want them to have a leader with the clear vision and the good judgement needed to inject a bit of hope back into the population and get the country back on its feet.

The problem for Labour was they won a landslide in terms of seats but not votes, so they've never been genuinely popular. And in trying to appease Reform voters, Starmer has alienated his natural support but not won over anyone that he's been trying to win over. That said, even as someone who doesn't rate Starmer we have to move away from the ridiculousness of having a managerial merry-go-round of PMs. It's not conducive to the country ever making any positive progress. I mentioned the footballification of politics on another thread the other day (think the thread got binned) but it's been incredibly damaging. Supporting a political party is not and should not be like supporting a football team.

The point you made wasn't really worth a response given your attempts to make it all about class. You make the underlying assumption that a more social democratic politics is somehow unattainable and for the birds even though it's worked well as a model elsewhere. You don't have to basically be a soft Tory in order to get anything done, that's a very narrow idea of what it means to be pragmatic.

Well Burnham is the only health secretary to ever privatise an NHS hospital so he isn't afraid to make unpopular decisions if he thinks they are right. That says, he seems to have reinvented himself since becoming Mayor so who knows whet he believes now. I like Streeting I think he is the most statesmanlike. Whoever wins needs to get Angela Rayner back in the cabinet to unite the labour party. That is just my opinion as somebody who has only been voting Labour for the past 5 years.

Thanks. I do like Rayner. I know she made a mistake, but it did look like just a mistake to me. She’s another one who seems to genuinely care about people and we need a lot more of that (imo). Oh well, I’ve got no say in all this either so will just get the popcorn out.
