I hope not. Overpriced and not good enough for PL.

Tbh, of all the strikers we've been linked with (making enquiries/entering discussions etc) in recent weeks, he would be in my top 2 or 3 for profile of player we'd be looking for. Far more to his game than some of the others; €20m seems a fair fee in the current climate.

Is there something you are basing this assessment of him on?

...we'd (potentially) buy him to be our number one striker, but at that price one of the big clubs will think it's worth buying him as a "project".

They know they could probably turn a profit on him just because he was on their books.

Chelsea will probably sign him, put him on a long lucrative contract, play him in a few cup matches and then flog him for £40m next summer.

last season, he scored 6 in La Liga up until end of October. Then he only scored once more for the rest of the season despite playing most games, more latterly on the bench.

I know nothing about this player but, if you want to play the stats game, he scored those six goals as well as 3 assists in 10 matches including scoring against Real Madrid. He was then called up for international matches where he played 1 of 2 games, scoring in that match.

Overall in 18 starts and 15 sub appearances in the Spanish top flight, he scored 7 and assisted 4 times. If a striker who scores close to 1 in 2 starts and assists a few as well at that level is (based on those stats alone) not going to be good enough to play in the Premier League, we are going to struggle to find one that is.

Of course, it could be that Levante were laying chances on a plate for him all the time and he is a donkey but I wouldn't write him off simply based on those stats.

This is interesting and we'll see if either us, or other clubs, try and sign him now that this information about his release clause seems to be public information.

However as per every summer so many other clubs seem to be after strikers as well so we probably won't be the only club chasing his signature if indeed we are seriously interested.

I see that Bournemouth are rumoured to be signing 21 year old 6ft 4in striker Álvaro Rodríguez from Spain for £18m and they seem pretty good at identifying talent but seeing as he's on Bournemouth's target list I doubt that at this moment in time we could compete with them due to them being established in the PL now and having European football next season.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Now that Bournemouth have European football it will be interesting to see how easily they stay within UEFAs 70% Squad Cost Ratio (SCR or whatever UEFA call it) limit as opposed to the new PL 85% SCR. The 70% rule has been causing issues for teams such as Newcastle and Bournemouth as per the article link below:-

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/fo

With the size of Bournemouth's stadium I can't imagine that they generate much match day revenue so the vast majority of their turnover must be generated by player sales which admittedly they're blooming good at! And it's the player trading model that we need to work hard to emulate because there's a limit to how much match day revenue that we can generate versus the PL teams in say London or Manchester who fleece the tourist day tripper fans.

Going back to Eyong just as a quick goals comparison between Etta Eyong and Álvaro Rodríguez.

Rodriguez scored 7 goals from 34 appearances for Elche who finished 15th in La Liga and is rumoured to be being bought by Bournemouth for £18m.

Etta Eyong scored 6 goals in 30 appearances last season for Levante who finished 16th in La Liga and is now said to be available for €20m and so that fee is very similar for both Eyong and Rodriguez and so appears to be the ballpark figure for a striker in their early twenties from La Liga with at least a full season under their belts and a few goals to their name.

Didn't they pay only €3m for him last summer? Nice of them to reduce the buyout clause to only 20m!

How many goals did Liam Delap score for Hull/Preston/Stoke before we signed him ?

With young strikers sometimes if the environment is right and the talent is there, they can just explode on the scene and have a breakout year. KEE had serious interest from elite clubs in Europe as recently as 6 months ago so the talent is evident. The goal record isn't amazing but not sure how many strikers who have double figure goals in La Liga will be queuing up to join us. We have to take a bit of gamble and hope to land on someone like we did with Delap.

I'd far prefer someone like Promise David. He's much bigger and seems to be incredibly strong and hard to get off the ball, which is vital in PL. Very reminiscent of Delap.

You have seen enough of Etta Eyong to know he isn't very strong? And yet he has played and scored regularly in one of Europe's better leagues. Whereas you would rather pay the same for a striker who is 3 years older and has never played at that level based purely on seeing him in the World Cup presumably.

Etta Eyong is 5'11". Promise David is 6'5". Just watch the reels of David. He just doesn't give a monkey's if he's being pulled back or pushed, he stays on his feet and gets through time and again. Much like Delap did, but he doesn't seem to charge straight into players like Delap. David's penalties don't look particularly strong, but he has scored loads in the Belgian League, as well as 3 in 9 matches in CL & Europa League. He's very good in the air.
Going on highlight reels for Etta Eyong, he looks lively, but I can't see him making those runs against the physical beasts in the PL. Quite a few of his goals seem to be just tap ins, he doesn't look like he scores many low xG goals. So from comparing the two via highlights, Etta Eyong's highlights aren't particularly impressive, and nor are his stats (gone a long time without scoring in La Liga and only shone for half a season- nothing else). David seems to have the physicality needed in PL, and has a more reliable and consistent record. So no, it's not just based on seeing him at the WC. Physicality is super important.

If you are going to do stats and then suggest someone 'like Delap', I'd suggest you look at Delap's stats for us after Christmas in the Premier League.

That is a fair point, but was inevitable really.
Delap was not bought to be our starting centre forward, as we were still looking to bring in Broja or Ionnaidis for £30m or so, right up to the end of the transfer window, not to mention a last minute effort to sign Latte Lathe.
Hirst got injured & it was immediately apparent the Ali Al Hamedi could not play the centre forward role we needed, particularly against PL defenders.
Delap played far more minutes than would have been expected pre-Christmas, especially for a guy who hadn't even gotten a full season of men's football in the Championship, when on loan.
Add in the mental fatigue, the new pressure of expectation & the links to a number of top sides in January; he was always going to hit a bit of a slump in that next period.

But I'm not saying to get someone "like Delap" am I? If I was, I'd be saying let's get Delap back. Delap had, and still has, some really good qualities, but he seemed to think he could just smash into people and that seems to have become his modus operandi. What I am saying is we need a CF with physicality, who can stay on their feet when they get barged and get their shirt tugged, and still keep control of the ball and get into the danger zone. Last time our forwards were too lightweight, Delap excepted, and I have so many recollections of Omari laying on the ground looking up at the ref as he waves play on.

FWIW, I'd take Etta Eyong for up to £10M - I think he's a punt but very unproven at this level, and at his age he could be a useful back-up option. But not over £10M, as there is far better value out there.

I'd want some to promise David would be great.

In all seriousness, Canadian commentary have been talking him well before the world cup. So it isn't like his performances in the world cup weren't expected here.

That's a very good point about him being bought last summer if the fee was only €3m at that time.

Our scouting network and recruitment process just needs to get light years better than it has been in recent years and identifying/finding talented players at an earlier stage in their career and then developing them here and getting them to (a) help the team achieve its goals and (b) then selling for a big profit to sustain the club financially is what we need going forwards.
