Although the regime in Chilé at the time was a military dictatorship who had perpetrated many murders of civilians. Then ago, this was also true of Argentina then...

Argentina aren't going to attack the Falklands and even if they did the disparity between the two militaries is far greater now. Stick one Type 45 down there and nothing they have is getting anywhere near the islands. There are also 4 Eurofigters permanently stationed there now. SB

Yet we keep being told we’re vulnerable and need to scrap domestic energy and water projects to pay for more military hardware. Maybe being 8th strongest global military power isn’t enough for some.

You honestly think that Argentina would attack the Falklands again or that Russia would attack us directly? Neither of those things is going to happen in my view. SB

Hi SB, no, more than its another geo political drama we’re going to be wrapped up in which is what I meant by “instability”. That said, I wouldn’t be surprised if we end up seeing Netenyahu and Trump trying to strong arm it away from us with sanctions and threats, seems to be the way or the world now.

I can't see Netanyahu having any interest in the Falklands. His geopolitical world-view is centred entirely around Israel and his own position. Antagonising the UK doesn't gain him anything on that front.

We are vulnerable, in certain areas. War has changed a lot in the last four years. Drones, cyber, covert attacks on production and infrastructure. That's where a lot of the increased expenditure is going, not tanks and rifles. The problem is actually one of revenue shortage (and inflation). The fact that, politically, our leaders have to rob other departmental budgets rather than being able to reform or increase taxation to cope with the more challenging environment we find ourselves in. Not helped by this situation itself directly causing cost-of-living issues (mainly gas and oil price rises).

We will see, it didn’t stop them arming Argentina last time so they could break into the Latin American arms market, and with our government set to impose a "comprehensive" package of sanctions in the coming weeks related to Israeli settlements, I’m sure we’ll see some retribution.

Lol! What possible damaging sanctions could Israel threaten the UK with? That would also be self defeating since we export them components for the Iron Dome and David’s sling etc. Not to mention we’ve assisted in shooting down Iranian and Houthi projectiles. The US won’t, it has $100’s billions of interests in the UK, and sanctions would cripple it’s companies operating in both the UK and Europe (since they typically have to comply with US Sanctions). People need to stop taking Trump’s word at face value, reporters shove a mic in his face in the hope of provocative comments and he blurts out whatever comes into his head. Pretty much like when he said Venezuela was going to be about big oil developmentl, before all the oil majors told him it wasn’t viable. He’s clueless. Argentina won’t do anything, it’s typical drum beating to distract from the government’s corruption and incompetence. Inflation is running at >30pc in Argentina, they’ve had to have US bailouts due to their currency falling in value, and the state has been selling off assets to pay down some of its debt.

Maybe he's not aware of the Israeli company, Navitas Petroleum, who are partnering Rockhopper to develop the Sealion oil field off the Falklands? I'm sure all that oil down there has not piqued the interest of Milei or Trumpy either...

| Donald Trump won’t support us in protecting the Falkland Islanders…. on 12:04 - Sep 4 with 568 views | OldFart71 | Like everything to do with the orange blob it's money. The Falklands are known for minerals probably worth a large fortune and like everything to do with Trump the $ signs are flashing in his eyes. It is my honest belief that with regards to Iran he is making money out of it whether that's betting on oil prices or whatever. I don't just pick Trump out though as politicians, leaders or whatever of every nation under most circumstances end up much richer after their time in charge and most aren't the least bit worried whatever they say about the masses. | | | |

Seabed resources (potential or discovered) have been the basis of the dispute for decades. The UK only originally held onto the islands in the late 19th/early 20th centuries as a strategic coaling station in the South Atlantic. Then a bit later to reinforce our claim to bits of Antarctica (which is also partly why the Argentines want it). I think there would have been some kind of agreement in the '80s if Galtieri hadn't decided to invade. The UK government did not want to have to pay for maintaining their sovreignty (e.g. retiring HMS Endurance). However, the events of 1982 made that impossible for the forseeble future.
