| Where do the good folk of TWTD stand on this Tiger situation 16:58 - Oct 12 with 1307 views | Billywitch | This is off the back of a man climbing into a Tiger enclosure in the UK on Saturday and sadly passing away. For me you absolutely don't retrospectively kill an animal for acting on his natural instincts, especially when someone has climbed into his cage. If, in real time, there was someone able to intervene to save the mans life then that's a slightly different situation. | | | | |

Side note, my Instagram feed had a couple of entirely unrelated pictures of tigers appear today (old posts, no reason to appear now, but slightly bad taste rn) Good old algorithms, what did we do before them eh?

I've spent the last couple of days quickly scrolling past tiger / man videos on twitter. I've managed to avoid them, but think they might be of the actual attack, not that I'm hanging around to find out. Why do people need to see this stuff?

Who are we to take animals from the wild and keep them locked up? Obviously it's different for places like Jimmy's farm and other places who take animals to protect and look after them but zoos make me very uncomfortable.

Jimmys is only round the corner from mine. Really has raised the bar. Colchester zoo does try, but it’s ran out of space. Especially with the Elephants, those poor things should have 10 x the enclosure

I hate the way these wild animals are kept in zoos. I know they do it for conservation but they will never be released back into the wild. We have been to Africa many times and seen loads of animals living in the wild. It is amazing seeing them living their lives as they should. (Obviously not tigers in Africa).

Certain species, notably the tiger, would not survive without wildlife parks. There are roughly 70 Bengal tigers in Ranthambore National Park and while it is very large, it isn't really the "wild" as such. Are you suggesting it should be closed?

A wildlife park in Europe will be measured in hectares, and is built for humans A National Park, like Rathambore, is an area created to protect wildlife, and hundreds of square miles. Yes, one should be closed, the other increased and protected.

Yes, Ranthambore is much larger than a conventional European wildlife park, most of which are large zoos. However, they are all essentially commercial vehicles, designed to make money & attract tourists. Many European parks do valuable work in breeding rare species & returning some of them to the wild if possible. Most of us don't like the idea of wild animals being kept in small cages, so maybe it's a question of scale?

Thankfully I’m not on Twitter but a mate did tell me that there were a few videos on there showing the tiger mauling that poor man. I can understand people justifying recording it by stating that the police etc might well be interested in it (but even that excuse is pushing it). But videoing it and then posting it online - what sort of person does that?

We live in a world where the US Government are going to live-stream the execution of a man in a wheelchair so it is not a surprise that some people on those awful platforms share videos like this. As to the original question, the tiger should not be killed, of course not. People put it in that cage and the animal just follows its natural instincts when an intruder enters its territory. It’s a question of fences. Rathambore doesn’t have a fence, a bit like the Serengeti. You can pay to get tours in both. A Zoo/Wildlife park is essentially a prison for innocents. A National Park is an area protected from human encroachment. So yea, ban all animal prisons, create areas free from human habitation and exploitation.

Brilliant idea! Then use the zoo's for illegal immigrants!

Classic example of everything being black and white. Can't possibly be any nuance at all.

I've not followed this and have steered clear of any videos, but I'd be devastated at the thought they'd kill the tiger for this. I've no idea if thats been suggested. It wouldn't surprise me though. It's not the tiger's fault.

You can't seriously be comparing Ranthambore to Twycross Zoo . Ranthambore is a remaining natural enclave and natural habitat of the tiger and other species, protected against further encroachment. The other's a bunch of pens and fenced enclosures for the entertainment of bored brummies.

Agree, only proviso is If it was a threat to people, shoot it with a tranquilizer dart I would hope.
