David Wright Confirms His Town Exit
David Wright Confirms His Town Exit
Thursday, 29th Apr 2010 09:14

Full-back David Wright has confirmed that he has not been offered a new contract by the Blues, as first revealed by TWTD yesterday. The former Wigan and Crewe man’s current terms are up at the end of June.

Wright, who is 30 on Saturday, said: “I saw the manager on Tuesday and he said some nice things about me, but that he was looking in a new direction. I don’t agree with his decision, but I have to respect it.”

The Warrington-born defender joined the Blues from the Latics in January 2007 and has made 125 starts and three sub appearances, scoring five goals, perhaps most notably the winner against Derby earlier in the season which brought Town their first win of the campaign.

Keeper Richard Wright is the other high profile out of contract player to be released, while Pim Balkestein and Jon Stead are also set to depart, a fee having been agreed with Coventry for the striker’s signature, although personal terms have not yet been settled. Loanee Liam Rosenior is understood not to have been offered a Town deal.

Manager Roy Keane continued to meet out of contract players yesterday to tell them their fate.

Coaches Steve Foley, Ian McParland and Chris Kiwomya are also out of contract this summer with Foley understood to be leaving the club.

Town will make official announcements on who is being kept on and who will be leaving the club on Friday.

Shame, he has done a better job at right back than keen has done as manager.

I'm surprised at this TBH. I seem to remember that RK said that one thing he's noticed is that when the team wins certain players seem to be in the team - and that DW was one of those!

I try to hard to trust his judgement, and just as I'm thinking he's getting things right (Wright?) he throws in a curve ball like this! He doesn't do himself any favours does he.

Meh... Not that bothered. He's a decent defensive full-back but he's not got the quality everybody seems to make out in my opinion. We can do alot better.

He's been solid but unspectacular - It seems to me 1 of his 4/5 new players is definitely a quality right back as he's clearly fallen out of love with Rosenior.. So lets just see how it pans out huh?

Ive always liked David Wright, a very solid dependable right back/left back, probably not the best going forward but defensively always very good. Would certainly be a decent back up to anyone who may come in thats why im a tad suprised he's being let go. good luck to him!!

wont be much point in club making any statements tomorrow !cats out of bag already . i think David Wright could have stayed on , but nothing surprises me these days , i just hope Keane gets it sorted early this year so team is not playing musical chairs at start of next season .Early signings, constructive and meaningful summer friendlies, and a flying start to new season. That might sound like tall order, but if we are going for promotion, the push must start NOW.!

"Best right back weve had in years".
And there was me thinking Fabian Wilnis was playing for us only a couple of years ago....

Surely lets see who his repalcement is and then judge if its a good decision or not. His attacking limitations meant he was not going to be offered a new contract by Keane but I am sure he will stay in the Championship. He is a decent player but not "brilliant" and we need players who are automatic first teamers rather than squad players. Good luck to him.

Good servant, played ok, but nothing more than average performances. We need better players to get out of this league and I completely agree with this decision as long as we have a younger starlet in our sights.

Its a shame but i guess he wouldnt have accepted one year extention anyway. This shows that RK is preferring O'Connor and Peters. Both of these have done well at fullback and offer more attacking options than Wright. Also if Evans has limited the squad numbers then this is an area that RK has sorted which leave him with more space to consentrate on the midfield and attack.

Agree with you Juniorscholes and bleedblue - Wish you luck DAvid, half decent player but I don't think he is the right bk that will be apart of the team to take us to the Premiership.

Well I just hope that Keane's gonna sort out the left back position too seeing as he didn't a year ago...have sunderland got any left backs they're trying to offload?!

Best of luck David and may thanks for the great service - always 110%.

You are a model professional and any team should be glad to have you both on the pitch and off. Your experience will undoubtedly help your future career both on and off the pitch.

JuniorScholes: of course there are better players out there, but the chances of us signing one of them is very remote. We're not a great draw to proven pros and taking a young player on its always a risk.

We'd do well to do better than Wright, he's a very solid defender and was one of the reasons we became more solid defensively this year.

I get the impression that Roy has something like a 4-2-3-1 in mind for next season, which will need attacking full backs to give us width, and certainly wouldn't suit David Wright (the Argos Chris Makin?).

That said, I'd have liked to have seen him stay to give a bit of versatility.

Reading articles like this make me think that RK was ONLY brought in as a heavy hand to cut the wage bill, sign cheap average players and with Clegg's help get the club making a profit. For us fans, we haven't really played any decent football this season and like many supporters on here, I feel let down. By releasing the likes of DW, again I feel let down as during the season we leaked a stupid amount of goals and just when I thought we might have found the winning defensive formula, I hear this!

Gutted!

With the amount of players being released this summer, I hope that Richard Wright, David Wright and Pimmy all start in what would be their last match this Sundayagainst the trash that are Sheffield Wednesday. Yes, it will be emotional (for me anyway) as I don't really want to see DW go. I don't see any immediate replacement for DW unless that whole Rosenior thing is Waffle or RK plans to mold Jaime Peters into Right Back??

Only Next Season will tell us!
