Keane: We Should Have Won Despite First Half Horror
Keane: We Should Have Won Despite First Half Horror
Saturday, 25th Sep 2010 18:04

Town boss Roy Keane felt the Blues ought to have ended up beating Scunthorpe, despite a dreadful first half display which saw the Iron go in 1-0 up at the break. After Jaime Peters’s equaliser, Jason Scotland was prevented from adding a second by a last ditch Cliff Byrne challenge, Peters had a header cleared off the line by Rob Jones and Darren O’Dea hit the bar.

Keane was thoroughly unimpressed with his team’s first half performance: “We never got going, we were waiting for something to happen and the goal was coming. We couldn’t clear our lines.

“Second half, in terms of the chances, the game should have been dead and buried. We were guilty of missing gilt-edged chances and the madness of it was that we nearly lost it at the end because of a lack of concentration.

“It was a funny old day," he added. "It was a real rollercoaster and in the second half, in terms of the clear-cut chances and the way we broke on them, we should have had the game dead and buried.”

The Blues boss replaced striker Connor Wickham on the half hour, but says there were plenty of others who he could also have subbed: “There were eight or nine players, not just Connor, that I was thinking, ‘when are you going to get going?’.

“You can’t continue that and the goal was no surprise. We were about the make the change anyway and we changed the shape with Luke coming on.

“We changed it again with Jaime coming on at half-time to give us a little bit of spark because there was only going to be one team that was going to win.

“In the second half, we were better, sharper, we were hitting them on the break and we really should have won the game.”

Keane confessed that he probably got his team selection wrong: “Jaime and a lot of other players were unlucky to be left out from the other night, Luke, Colin Healy, Kennedy, these boys did really well. I obviously feel that I didn’t get my own job correct today in terms of the first half.”

Scunthorpe boss Ian Baraclough believed his team deserved all three points: “I’ve seen Ipswich blow teams away this season. Their midfield pair have dominated games and I thought we dominated them. The more I’m talking about it,the more I think that it was two points dropped.

“The lads are in there with their heads down, they’re getting in positions to score and it’s when we stop getting in those positions that I’ll start to panic.

“We created 15 or 16 chances again today and something’s got to change.”

I'll take the point and still unbeaten away :) sounds from the radio like they had more and better chances and while we had some they would have won by about 3 with better finishing

Keano's honesty is so refreshing, Well done for making the change/formation Keano as this may well be a very important point come the end of the season.

I think were likely to stick with Hyamand 4-3-3 (4-5-1) away from home now, but it's a shame we need to do that against fairly poor opposition. Would be nice to see Wickham/Scotland have a chance to form a partnership. Anyway still not a bad point away especially after being one down. We could still do better but overall more good signs than bad ones. COYB!
Tough test on Tuesday to come against Reading. Would be happy witha point there too.

Meanwhile, Naarwich were beaten by a Hull City getting their first away win for 18 months. Buckie obviously missed that because he was, as ever, obsessing over us. Weirdo!

Listened on radio . We cannot fall back into last seasons habits and faults ( losing concentration in the last few minutes and not taking our chances ) or we will end our season with more disappointment and moaners ! RK must get the players more alive at the start or other teams will take full advantage if GM is not on top of his game . Without him today we would be looking at our second defeat ! Once again it looks as though we are going to become incosistent and not play to our full ability ( several players did not show their normal spark ) so allowing a team to outplay us for long periods ! Still unbeaten away and another point in the bag so we are still about the 2 points a game average to keep us on track for the top 6 ( minimum ) finish .

There was probably 15 minutes where we were on top and looked good. under_the_sun666 - do you not realise that none of our strikers scored today? Why are you picking on Priskin? Wickham and Scotland were equally as poor because there was NO SERVICE. WE DID NOT HAVE A SHOT ALL FIRST HALF. This isn't the strikers' fault, it is a lack of service due to poor performances from Leadbitter and Norris. Edwards and Townsend weren't great either. Midfield were sluggish all game until Peters livened it up; so to blame the Strikers and in particular Priskin (who got a 20 minute run out compared to Scotland's 70) is quite frankly stupid.

We've played 8 won 5 drawn 2 and lost one without particulary playing well in
my opinion I just think the rub of the green has definately fallen our way this season but I think people take this draw too seriously, Scunthorpe is a tough place to go and we had a poor game but still came
out with a point and we have also had one of the hardest strts to the campaign when we hit good form we'll cement our position near the top of the table.
I personally don't like sitting in top 3 this early on because it means nothing at this stage of the season other than raising hopes. Sit between 4th and 8th then hit form at the right time, then there is no
pressure which is why I believe we've had such a good strt

It sounded a rather mixed performance, but a point there is not bad so we'll take it and move on.

Well, at least Roy admits when he gets it wrong - full credit and despite a seemingly poor showing - we are STILL unbeaten away from home. Well done to all concerned.

It's a tough place to go like a lot of clubs on the road. It was good to make up for a poor showing in the first half to almost winning it and its places like Scunthorpe where we need to be winning to cement a place in the top six in the coming weeks and months. But It's a point away from home where in recent years we have struggled. If we can beat Reading it would be really good then follow up and thrash the DIRTY SMELLY LEEDS. COYB

Decent point but I can't help but think we have to beat teams like Scunny if we want to achieve anything this year.

A good point. Would have taken it before the game as there are no easy games in this league especially away from home. Still a long long way to go.

You do not maintainn control of the football with a long huff down-field as was evident during the first half this afternoon.

Agreed. Pint sized dwarf up front (Scotland) v a 10 ft centre half (Jones), so what do we do? You've got it, send every ball into orbit time and time again. Got the act together after the break, and missed no end of sitters. Macauley was a rock at the back. Other than him and a better half from Edwards, nobody shone. Good visiting support guys. Well done.

This is not a team we do well against and a game last year we would have lostam keane shows how far he has come as a tactical managetr by being brave enough to change things so early on and again beginning of second half, that clearly won us the point. What worries me is our consistant inability to come out firing on all cylinders first half. Roy can you firstly use the rocket saved for half time before the game starts and also start with peters - he may not be perfect right back but is much better than eastman particularly at pressing forward.

Only was able to listen to this game on the radio- but we were well and truly blown away by Scunthorpe in the first half and should have been 4/5-0 down. Very VERY pleased to have picked up a point- it keeps us in the play-offs for the time being.
Noticeably- Scunthorpe played to our weaknesses and it was only GM AND Fulop (he sounded outstanding again)- who kept us in the game.
The radio commentary was very harsh when the goal was scored-apparently the player was totally unmarked (whose job was that?).
Sounded like Edwards had a good game and Hyam definately settled things down. Can't blame Priskin- that is totally unfair (think he got 17/18 minutes?).
Lets stay positive (it is still an away draw) and see where we go from here.
Northampton at home in the cup- should be a good game

you lot make me laugh. What do you seriously know about the game??
We've not played well all season, no game has been good, we've won against the run of play but there's still delusional idiots thinking we've been promoted.
Come on, wake up and sniff the coffee, if we're in the top 7 or 8 after January then i'll begin to believe otherwise, get real guys, we're a mid a table team with no goal scorers and no creative midfielders so once we realise that then perhaps we'll all start acting accordingly???????????

Grow up!

Was not impressed with a draw against Scunthorpe. Keane got the line up wrong but he is tactically useless so that does not surprise me. The "Horny for Keane" brigade of fans still approve of this dross though !!!!

Great point even tho we were rocky to say the least in the first half. I think some people need to step back a litle and evaluate what, in reality is a sterling start to a season (prob one of the best in many years).
To start with, the teams that we have played - Middlesborough, Burnley (ex prem) Palace (could not get near them last term) Bristol City, Portsmouth, QPR and now Scunny away. We have 15 points out of a possible 24, sit in a very decent joint 3rd place, undefeated away from home and only one loss. We have 11 goals and with the exception of QPR that is there or there abouts of what everyone else up there has scored.
So yes we are having a decent season, and yes we know there is only 8 games gone but come on surely being 3rd/4th today is a million times better to what we were last year and were we have been in recent years. It is a marathon not a sprint but to be tailed off last is not gonna win anything.
6 or 7 points from our next 3 games would be awesome.

Suffolk Sam..... Last season has gone forget about it. Both Keane and priskin are working there socks off to give us a good season what true town fans deserve if your not happy go up the A140. If we were doing really poorly and struggling in the bottom half of the table you would have a point but we are doing well.
