Keane Leaves Town
Keane Leaves Town
Thursday, 6th Jan 2011 22:52

TWTD understands that Town manager Roy Keane has parted company with the club. The Blues boss has been under pressure with Town having dropped to 19th in the Championship despite a promising start to the season which saw them hit second.

Keane, whose contract was due to end in June, joined the Blues in April 2009 after Jim Magilton’s sacking and despite winning his first two games in charge at the end of the 2008/09 season never threatened to repeat his success at Sunderland.

The end looked to have been on the cards for some weeks now with Marcus Evans apparently unwilling to commit funds for transfers and Keane having exchanged angry words and gestures with fans after Monday’s 1-0 loss at home to Nottingham Forest.

Earlier today, Paddy Power stopped betting on the identity of Keane’s likely successor with former Wigan, Bradford, Sheffield Wednesday and Derby boss Paul Jewell’s odds having been cut from 20/1 to 6/5.

Former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton and ex-Charlton boss Alan Curbishley have both previously been linked with the Blues.

Fantastic! We can now put this ugly episode behind us. Now go get Curbishley, like we should've done when we sacked Jim.

Inevitable, unfortunately. Let's hope whoever comes in gets us playing some attacking football, helps our already decent squad realise their obvious potential and is backed by ME with some cash to bring in 2 or 3 quality additions.

On SKy sports website now! I want a reasonably respected manager who likes to play good football and will atleast try and get ipswich doing what we used to do...passing the ball! Keane never tried to achieve that. To be honest I don't know enough about Jewell to comment, obviously I know about his achievement with derby in the Prem but that was a different kettle of fish. Do his teams play good football anyone?

Nothing original here. Hughton might be a good fit for us. Good luck Keano.

I'll believe it when it's 100% officially confirmed but if this is true then thank Christ.

I'm gutted. All Keane needed was time and backing. I hate this quick fix attitude towards football. It's a sad day for the town, make no mistake.

The so called fans do not know enough of what was going on behind the scenes to be able to judge ! Many of the so-called fans do not have a clue about modern football ! The days of the " Ipswich way " went when Sheepshanks ran the club for his own advancement with the FA and ran us into administration ! Todays football is big business with little regard for loyalty to club history and certainly not from players ! The only consideration these days is " money " and how much can we take from the fans !

5 managers in a decade is not actually that bad, when you lok at the likes of qpr and boror, who have had 3 and 14 respectivly. (in a shorter space of time) keane was the wrong man. alarm bells started ringing for me when he let go of rhodes. another club wouldnt have givin him 14 games last season, and would certanly acted before now this.

as for his replacement...
houghton- not the right man. he got promoted last season with a prem squad, very in-expeianced, (only 2 seasons under his belt) alright un-justly sacked, but would get the job on a sympathy vote

jewel- number 1 contender. did fantastic jobs at bradford and wigan, although he had a terrible season in the prem with derby, (who where promoted before there time) has the experiance to sort this mess out

curbs- number 2 contender. wheeler dealer, sensible and solid would take a little longer to get were we are going, but feel he would provide a solid base on which to build from and bring some much need stabilaty

cotteril- dont know much about the guy, so cant really comment (anyone want to fill the blanks?)

burley- ipswich through and through proven track record, yet think its time to start looking to the future, keagans retrn to newcastle didnt work out so well afterall and dont think he can be trusted with money

poyet and tarrico combination- proving themselves worthy in the lower leagues, but brighton are in from (ok becasue of them two) how will they cope at a higher level with a team thats not in form? and would they come here/ or even be givin permisioon from brighton to talk? even if they did, a gamble in my eyes

basicly, whoever comes will have to overhaul the couching staff and bring in a rightback (and a leftback for that matter) and put some fizz back into the team. whoever they are, i wish you luck.

TOWARDS WEMBLEY WE MARCH!??

All this only leaves me with one question:

All you fans who are now saying you are "gutted" and how you think this is a mistake etc etc - where the hell were you over the last week when Keano was getting bloody crucified by the vast majority on here?

KEANO! KEANO! KEANO!

best of luck to roy. i still think he will make a fine manager, somewhere. dont think paul jewell is the right man. chris hughton ticks all the boxes for me. a gentleman, good coach. players seem to want to play for the guy.

Hope it's either Burley,Curbs,Hughton,Wilkins or even Jimbo coming back (I very much doubt that though)...hopefully not Jewell or Megson.

Keane (if he has actually gone?) was the worst thing that ever happened to our club..

I wouldn't even wish him on Norwich.

Good riddance.

he had time backing and money. he'd been givin a hell of a lot more than most, and you must be crazy if your enjoying the football and league postion at the moment. (or for the last 20 months infact

meekreeh- i agree with you in a certain respect, the ipswich way has gone but i dont agree that sheepshanks used ipswich to further his chair in the f.a. i met him a couple of times in the players lounge and he had every respect for town and its histroy. he wanted every success, for itfc, and its a shame that some bad decsions (to extend the stands for example) drove us into admin, but hey hindsights a wonderfull thing right?

garv- paul jewals teams before the disater of derby in the prem were very formidable. his bradford team (although the only name i remeber is staurat mcoll and dean windass) where if i remeber correctly not a team of household stars, but played togeher and fought together as 1. very solid players, not the most atractive football but very dependable and commited. his wigan team were fantastic. we challenged with them in the royle days (when we where called the entertainers) attractive football, passing moving and won the champ and stayed up as a result. his derby team were promted before their time via the playoffs, and wernt infrastrually ready for the prem or the fallout that follwed

To my mind, this had to go one of two ways. Either the management approve of Keane's approach (especially the defensive improvement) and back him in the transfer market and with a contract extension - some buys (not loans) and an extra year would have done that - or they say no, enough's enough. You can't have 6 months left on a contract and "play it by ear", that's just dead man walking territory.

I like Keane as a man, I appreciate his honesty, I think the squad is better than when he took over, even Rory Fallon's winning me over. Magilton had too much dead weight, too many lazy overrated players like Counago and Lisbie (the worst signing since Pennyfather), and whilst I quibble with David Wright's departure, I think squad wise we're strong. Where Keane's been weak is tactics, he's missed an experienced assistant (how different might things have been if Peter Taylor had joined us?). I think his in match tactical decisions are baffling at best, Priskin and Townsend off was the final straw for me, never mind the Norwich result.

A little humility, and Keane could have been a great manager for Town, as it is he's left a springboard for the next incumbent, who I hope people have more time for. Some I feel will celebrate this and be pleased we've slipped to where we are just because they hated Keane long before which is unfair.

Jewell would be a mistake, a big one, Curbishley's been out of the game a long time and would be a caretaker I feel. I'm hoping for Hughton or Poyet/Tarrico, although Butcher could do a damned good job.

Oh christ imagine Roy Keane being unveilled at Norwich in the coming days! Haha! You can but dream!

I'm just ignoring the people stating that this club is now a sacking club etc. Unfortunately as much as I dislike as you do, football is not what it used to be and if it wasn't Evans taking over the club we arguably wouldn't exist or someone else may have rescued us.

Long story short, great news excited as to who might take over now!

Good luck to whoever comes in because its one hell of a mess and i cant see it getting cleared up any time soon. This execution dragged on far too long and i truly cant remember things being so depressing at PR ever, and i include the Duncan era in that too.

Sounds like Paul Jewell is already in place.
Hopefully he'll get some financial backing to sort out the mess at PR (and hopefully will sign a decent Assistant)
6/5 to take over. Sounds like the bookies know something we don't.
Interesting decision as manager,- bound to have split concensus here!
Anyway, best of luck Jewell,- thought they would at least apoint a Caretaker away at Chelsea though! (what a baptism of fire!)

Don't think I'll be rejoicing over Keane's departure, although I'm mightily relieved. It's never nice to see an Ipswich manager sacked but he simply had to go. I'm still holding my breath for the moment though - who knows who's going to be announced as our next gaffer after all? The bookies and inside info are all pointing towards Jewell, but I'll wait and see myself. To all those saying he'll be a terrific manager in the future: perhaps he will, but he has shown neither promise nor tactical ability as of late. He's been poor; surely people cannot deny this?

Whilst I wish Roy no ill will I'm glad to see the back of him. Alarm bells were ringing for me after last years West Brom game with his they'll never play for me again comments, MaCauley was one of the three he aimed this at which sums up Roy's tenure at Ipswich.

Mystified by the lack of an announcement yet, makes it all seem unreal.
Sad to see him go. For a long time I supported him on these boards but my faith turned out to be misplaced. Simply put, wrong man for the wrong job.
I really hope they consider his replacement carefully and not just throw Jewell in the deep end. Give the team over to Chris Kiwomya for the game against Chelsea (if any manager gets anything out of that game it will be a miracle) and interview and shortlist a few candidates.
My worry is that this is already a done deal. I don't know enough about Jewell and am happy to give anyone a chance, but feel this decision needs at least a LITTLE time.
Good Luck Roy. I thought you were the promised one and for your sake will not change my avatar and name. Wish you could have gone out more honourably (feel that if he was told Chelsea is your last game, he would have still lead them on and said goodbye to the fans).
Its time now for ME to put in serious investment behind Paul Jewell before it is too late. If Jewell wants his first 3 targets, the board should do everything they can to insure he gets them.
A new era begins. Lets hope we can move away from the relegation zone.
