Liverpool Now Reportedly Main Contenders for Wickham
Liverpool Now Reportedly Main Contenders for Wickham
Sunday, 10th Apr 2011 09:37

Liverpool are this week’s main contenders to sign Town striker Connor Wickham in the summer, according to today’s tabloids. Tottenham had previously been reported to be the frontrunners but manager Harry Redknapp has recently played down his interest in the £10 million-rated frontman.

Like the rest of the Premier League’s bigger clubs, the Reds have been mentioned in connection with Wickham on plenty of occasions with their director of football strategy Damien Comolli spotted at Town’s 1-1 home draw with Hull City in February.

The 18-year-old, who extended his Town contract until 2014 earlier this week, supported the Merseysiders as a child.

On Friday, Blues boss Paul Jewell was realistic about the prospects of keeping Wickham if a big offer came in, but said the club currently aren't looking to cash in and that he didn't think that the player was yet interested in moving on: “Every player has a price, but I’m not looking to sell Connor Wickham and I don’t think Connor Wickham’s looking to leave.

“If someone came in with a silly offer and he wanted to go, we’d have to listen to it. But that would be the same for any player. “

Elsewhere, Town, Burnley and Reading are again all reported to be chasing Tottenham right-back Adam Smith, as first revealed by TWTD last month. The 19-year-old has impressed while on loan at Bournemouth this season.

We are now in a position to rebuff any offer under £20,000,000 as he has signed an extension to his contract, but however, any fee above that would be hard to resist.

Sadly, I don't expect Wickham to be playing for us next year. The new contract is in many ways pointless. Okay, it means we have a better bargaining tool, plus it will cost more to buy his contract out - but ultimately if we receive a big bid, Wickham will be sold - regardless of how long he has on his contract.

I am the only Ipswich Town fan that thinks that Connor Wickham is one of the most over rated players ever ?!

And before you all start jumping up and down saying that he is only 17 etc, i know ! - But come on, £10m/£15m/£20m for an unproven championship player with "potential" ?

The only Town accademy player that has gone on to really great things is Darren Bent and he is fetching that sort of money now and he is PROVEN !

Any bid between £5m-£7m will be accepted and you can bet your bottom dollar that it will then be come an "undisclosed" fee so we will never know anyway and all believe its the crazy amounts that everyone thinks.

I am not knocking the lad, he is clearly young and I hope he goes on to bigger and greater things, but there is no way anyway can justify spending £15m on him.

Sorry Garv, i did know that, dunno why I put 17 lol

Backinbeeige, not sure if you are trying to make a point there but him being young has as many negatives as it does positives.

Well Liverpool have previous in overpaying for an unproven striker - £35m for Andy Carroll after 15 games in the PL says it all.

The conversation with Liverpool should be pretty quick...'he's under contract, if you make a bid in the region of £15m then perhaps we will listen' puts phone down...it's surely that simple, he's happy here and we're not looking to sell and his best years are surely still to come!

Well after the torres and carrol transfers 25 million will sound quite cheap to them.

havinit69, you must be mad if you think we would sell him for 5-7mil. there is no benifit selling him at that price.

He's not going to go down in price. just think I much he will be worth after that 'potential' is a bit more fulfilled after a full season of championship football

cheer up.

Didn't Dean Bowditch have bags of potential, what about Jordan Rhodes ??

Potential doesnt guarentee success, I am not saying that he is at the same level as Bowditch but I do seem to recall he was going to be the next greatest Town prospect.

I am also not saying that he won't go on to great things, I just don't see as much potential as most other town fans do, just my opinion. There is no way he is worth £10/£15m NOW!

I agree with havinit69 - Wickham is ok for an 18 year old - when compared to other great youngsters at that age like Giggs, Beckham, Owen they were already class acts. I really hope he makes it big and we have loads of sell on clauses in his future contracts but at the moment he is just ok.

He is more than ok! Reason I say this is because he has scored 7 goals this season and is our 3rd highest goal scorer behind norris and scotland but he has played less games./.. out of his ideal position and this also shows he can be versitile and has done a good job on that left wing especially as he 18 to be 3rd highest goal scorer at the club + be playing for england under 21's I would say he is more than ok. Yes Wickham hasn't got a completely good game which is to be expected but with time and training his game will improve and he will become an all round polished product... and so his value will definatly continue to increase... Hence why clubs will fight for him now at such a high price just incase he scores bundles of goals and his price increase further or because town get promoted and it will make it even harder to get him... I agree that its ifs and buts.. but that is probably why clubs are going to pay over the odds... which agreed with havint 15M may be a bit much at this stage in his career but there are reason why this may be as stated above.
I feel it will be more Beneficial for town to keep hold of him and get a full championship season out of him for a promotion push and hopefully further increase this asking price for when he may be sold.

I totally agree with havinit69. In fact I said much the same a few weeks ago on here. I'm NOT knocking Connor before anyone says I am. He's probably worth £5-8M and when we sell him a sell-on clause is a must. I'm sure he'll be with us one more season and if he gets 20+ goals then we can start talking £10M.

Hahahah are people honestly saying hes worth at least £20 mill and being serious??? Hes got potential and has become a regular for a decent championship club at 17, but he is no where near that kind of money yet. And i stress the word yet.

This speculation has come a day after Wickham signing a new contract stating he wants to improve and develop with us. No theres no back bone to this story just lazy journalism tbh. But if Wickham can keep playing at a high level and play week in week out and reach his massive potential then 1 or 2 years down the line we might be looking at £10 - 15 mill, but lets be honest hes no Rooney or Caroll is he . . . . . . . . . . . . . YET!!!! duh duh duuuuuuuuh

Well said Havinit69!! There is one thing tho buddy there has been alot of players gone for large amounts 10+ when there unproven and have great potential so lets hope Wickhams potential gets us the big bucks!!
