Jewell Has Rare Options at Centre-Half
Jewell Has Rare Options at Centre-Half
Friday, 16th Sep 2011 11:23

Town boss Paul Jewell unusually could have decisions to make at centre-half for Monday’s live Sky game against Coventry with Ívar Ingimarsson closing in on fitness after his spell out with a thigh injury. Senegalese international Ibrahima Sonko has trained only fleetingly since being at the club but is also likely to be available for selection against the Sky Blues.

Jewell said: “Ívar’s been up and down, it’s been difficult for him because he got injured after three or four days of pre-season.

“He got back fit, got into the team, but then got injured at Bristol City, so it’s been stop-start for Ívar.

“He had 90 minutes against Gillingham [for the reserves] the other day and that will only have done him good, so we’ll have to wait and see.”

The Blues manager says the Sonko has been on the Playford Road sidelines this week but is training with the fitness coach today: “In fairness to him, he’s only trained once or twice since he’s been here.

“After the Leeds game he nicked his hamstring, then his first day’s training last week was on the Friday before the game at Blackpool and he’s been a bit stiff since.

“That’s because he hasn’t got a proper pre-season under his belt. I think he deserves great credit for almost wheeling himself out for games.”

Recent loan signing Danny Collins will almost certainly partner Sonko or Ingimarsson at the heart of the defence on Monday.

Jewell says striker Nathan Ellington will come into his thoughts after his hat-trick in the reserves' 8-1 victory on Tuesday: “We’ve only got five subs, but he will be in contention, Scotland will be in contention, anyone who is fit and is doing well in training will be in contention.

“There’s nothing to say he’s only going to be on the bench, he can play as well. We’ll have to wait and see.”

Midfielder Lee Martin misses Monday’s game as he is serving the final game of his three-match ban for his red card at Peterborough, but Mark Kennedy is fine after his recent calf niggle.

maysixth

why on earth would you have bowyer on the wing when you have josh carson who has never had a bad game in my opinion pushing to be in the first and being left out at the expense of a cm playing out of position?

i fully support paul jewell but the positions he has been playing some players has baffled me, the southampton game i believe it was we had 4 CM's playing a right winger at right back, two left sided centre halves and one man up front and people wonder why we lost that game?

MaySixth, Leadbitter will be awesome coming off the bench, just imagine the impact he could have on the game. You could volunteer yorself if he's the best option.
Oh, and I think if Ingimarsson is fit he's a slight improvement on Delaney>

Well, I've heard a few people call Bowyer a 'flanker' over the years...

If all fit:-
Stockdale
Ingimarsson Sonko Collins Kennedy
Andrews
Edwards Bowyer Bullard Cresswell
Chopra
I know it can be construed as 4-5-1 but we would have wide men with pace and the other two midfield men must support Chopra. Certainly would not play JET I have seen every game this season and he has been pretty poor. If Bowyer is fit would definitely play him - he was superb for Brum last season and you do not become a poor player in the space of a few months. Fun trying to pick a team and no doubt it will be completely different PJ may even play 4-4-2 !!!!

JET to be introduced on 68' in place of Scotland at 1-1 after Bullard free kick, score two to win the game, one a bullet header at the far post, Bullard to instigate a bundle and crock a knee ligament.

StowTractorBoy, so andrews who is possibly the worst defensive player i've seen in years a DM? dont'y joke switch him to rm, kenno up to DM and cresswell back and i like that line up. i still would put edwards at right back i have a lot of time for him there and he does imo get a lot more s**t than he deserves

Paste has options at centre-half in the same way as the condemned man can choose between the noose, the chair and the firing squad.

Carson has done nothing this season to warrant a starting place. Young player or not.

What about Daryl Murphy?

Anything less than a 4-4-2 and a big WIN will be unacceptable. Playing a striker up front rather than out of position on the wing would also be great. Let's just hope PJ doesn't try to 'grind out a draw' - sorry PJ lovers, his words, not mine!

Why not play three centre backs with two attacking full backs, the fastest of the centre backs acts as sweeper?
Stockdale
Collins (Capt)
sonko Iva
Edwards, Bullard, Bowyer, Cresswell
Andrews
Chopra, Scotland

Yep. Garv wins for me although my bench would be slightly different.

If Leadbitter is anywhere near that first 16 i'll do a small weep.

Garv added 22:36 - Sep 16
What would you change Keaneish? Thing is you can put your house on Leadbitter being in the squad.

Anyone know what ever happened to Jamie Peters? Last I saw of him, he was making an awesome show against arsenal in that 1-0 win (that i'm still dining out on), probably one of the best right back performance of the season.
...think he has only played aout 12 minutes of football since then. Why?
