Magilton Flattered By Northern Ireland Link Monday, 10th Oct 2011 19:03
Former Blues boss Jim Magilton says he’s flattered to have been linked with the soon-to-be-vacant Northern Ireland manager’s job. Current boss Nigel Worthington will step down after Tuesday’s match in Italy.
Ex-Northern Ireland skipper Magilton said: "I would be keen to speak to the Irish Football Association - it's something I've always wanted to do, it's an ambition."
The 42-year-old says he’s "very flattered" to be mentioned as a contender but admits it’s a tough position: “It’s a very difficult job. We don't have the depth of talent playing at the highest level and that makes it so much more difficult to qualify for major tournaments.”
Magilton is currently assistant to his one-time Northern Ireland team-mate Michael O’Neill with Dublin-based Shamrock Rovers, who the duo helped to the group stages of the Europa League.
The Belfast-born ex-midfielder isn’t ruling out the duo teaming up with Northern Ireland: “Michael is doing a great job as manager of Shamrock Rovers and has a lot of good qualities.
"It's something I'd like to happen but whether it would be for him or not is something we would have to discuss.
"He maybe has his own plans so it would be a case of sitting down and talking things out. We have worked well together at Shamrock Rovers and have enjoyed limited success."

Jim Magilton consistently got Ipswich Town top half finishes on a much smaller budget than Keane and Jewell have had to work with. Although Jewell is doing OK, Keane's finishes have only served to prove what a superb manager Magilton was. Even before him, Royle was finishing 15th or 16th in the end.
Magilton had £12 million to spend when Evans first arrived on the scene, money which was spent on players such as Lisbie and grossly inflated fees for Norris for instance.
His treatment of Dan Harding here and the altercation with one of his own players at QPR, which lead to his sacking by them, do not strike me as 'superb'. The fact Magilton has struggled to find a meaningful role in professional football since the QPR incident would imply a number of people in the game agree!
Hope you get the job Jim...said it before and i'll continue to say it - hope he's back here in the hotseat one day...a true town Legend...his pride & passion for this club has been sorely missed.
Is it not possible people could just wish the guy the best rather than having a go off him?He was a great servant to the club and maybe because it never worked out as a manager i would still wish him well.If he made mistakes at Ipswich or QPR i'm sure he will have learnt from them.He is only a young guy and it would be great to see him get a good job like this.
I'm still appalled by the way Jim was treated by a section of the fanbase, let alone the club. At the time I thought he had done okay, but was happy enough to see some new blood come in, particularly if it meant Evans would put some money into the squad. Time has given his tenure here some real context, but regardless, he never deserved to be nicknamed "dim" and be subject to the amount of criticism he was.
If I remember correctly the players at Ipswich when Jim was manager diddnt help him. There was a few incidents of certain group of players going on the beer and taking boozy holidays during the season. He did very well to handle the situation and discipline the players involved.
I dont blame him for wanting to manage Town, he had all the passion and entheusiam (sorry for spelling) in the world. The problem was that he was friends with all the players and this diddnt help him with the transtition from player to manager.
I also believe he will become a good manager with more experience at a lower level and I would like to see him back at Town if he can prove himself as a manager elsewhere. He did show some promise and did reasonably well. With more managerial experience added to his passion and ambition for Ipswich I think he could be a top manager here.
Whilst only Assistant Manager at Shamrock, doesn't this still mean that he now has more European football experience than Keane and Jewell put together ? For an inexperienced manager, I thought he did a pretty good job for us. Also, until his sacking I seem to recall that QPR were doing pretty well also ? I think he has been given far too much stick by some fans imo. Good luck to him.
Jim Magilton certainly gave his all for Ipswich Town both on and off the pitch but I would not categorise him as a legend - a great servant yes and a Manager who was learning his trade with us. I like the bloke but people forget how appalling some of his team selections and tactics were. I think the Northern Ireland job would suit him down to the ground and he will approach it with enthusiasm. Lets face it he can do no worse than Worthington. Good luck I say.
Thought he was ok here but it came too soon and he was too close to some of the players. I fear QPR may have tainted his CV and he has struggled to get a meaningful job since. Hope he gets it and it works out for him but I suspect it's a bit of a poisened chalice as the teams ambition outstrips it potential. Would do well to mentor with a good Manager for a few years
Unlike beano Super Jim is a very good manager just waiting to happen. If he could just channel his enthusiasm in a slightly different direction he will make an outstanding manager
People foregt that QPR fans were praising him for bringing in a new, exciting style of football and getting results until the incident with the player.
I feel sorry for Northern Ireland if they appoint him. They'll certainly go backwards as he's tactically inept, utterly inept. Dreadful hoofball , players not on their natural positions etc etc.... Good servant for ITFC as a player but very poor as a manager and when things are going wrong he blames everyone and everything apart from himself.
Before ME came in with his millions I, like the majority of Town fans, thought that Jim was doing a good job. Building a team with both youth and experience.
I'm pretty sure that just before ME came in, Jim would of had a list of potential targets from the lower leagues and maybe aboard, to target during that transfer window.
Nearly all of his signings after ME were average at best. Think everything came too soon and he did not have the experience of spending money.
Jim was not a poor manager, just one whose passion led him to be too narrow minded and not listen to others.
Those who say that he was a poor manager are probably just judging him after ME. I think Jim will become a good manager, he just needs to curb his temper and willing to cement experience in the lower leagues
