Doncaster Striker Sharp Available at Cut Price? Friday, 30th Dec 2011 13:43
Doncaster Rovers striker Billy Sharp’s release clause is £1.85 million and not the £3 million claimed by the South Yorkshire club’s chairman John Ryan, according to reports. Town manager Paul Jewell recently ruled the Blues out of the running for the 25-year-old’s signature if he was going to cost £3 million.
If Sharp, for whom Town made an unsuccessful bid of £2.3 million in the summer, is available at the lower figure, then the Blues could well renew their interest.
However, with Premier League Fulham and Wigan and several Championship clubs including Leicester and Southampton — who had a bid of £3.25 million accepted in the summer when Sharp decided to remain with Rovers — also understood to be ready to make a move, Town would probably be outsiders for the former Sheffield United man’s signature.
Elsewhere, ex-Blues loanee Marlon Harewood has rejoined Nottingham Forest on a four-month contract and could make his second debut for the Tricky Trees at Portman Road on Monday.
Former Town defender Ian Miller has joined Grimsby on a 16-month deal having recently left administration-threatened Darlington.

Love the guy but he's very much like what we already have, would sooner spend the money on bringing back Rhodes x-)

Sharp is currently the best striker in this division. If we can buy him for under £2mil is a steal... i think the way our fans treated him when he played here could be a factor! Sharp and chops upfront is mouth watering prospect...

If he has a release clause of £1.85m and we had an offer of £2.3m rejected back in the summer..........................I'm confused as to why after rejected our offer, the player himself turning down moves to other clubs why would they enter into a new contract with a lower release clause than what's already been rejected. Sounds like some journo is making stuff up!

How can the release clause be £1.85M if we had a bid of £2.3M turned down in the summer?? Surely that would have released the clause? Or have I got the wrong end of that?

Release clause only comes into effect in the Jan window

I seriously doubt we will get within a country mile of signing Sharp, sadly !

Not going to happen unfortunately, because we are at the wrong end of the league. If we were in the top 2 or 3 with realistic prospect of Premier League next season then I reckon we'd have had a great chance.

£1.85M is about what we paid for Priskin, which goes to show how awful that signing was! At that price Sharp is worth considering, although it seems our transfer funds are very limited and the priorities have to be to tighten the defence.

If we pay nearly £2m for jet and £1m for chopra we should break the bank for the best striker in the league by a mile

Blimey I think some people overate this guy I really do. Not saying I wouldn't love to see him here but he's not as good as some say. Priskin scored a good amount the season before (I think) we signed him and look what happened there. Although Sharp has scored goals before at this level he wouldn't I don't think be worth £3million. Think how much collectively we could improve the team with that. £1.85 is a different matter.

Priority is def and midfield but we must remain aware of anyone who can strengthen the team in any position. Sharp would do this.

Should have bought him instead of Chopra in the first place!!!

Seems as if you got your facts wrong yet again Mr Jewell - didn't research that too well then did you ? ..... surprised ? - NO.

If we have any ambition we need to be spending this on a quality proven striker. We spent little in way of fees in the Summer and raked in over £8M for Wickham - the players who left probably evened out the wages we spent on new comers (although Bullard probably changed that). We need at least 5 new players to replace the 4 loaness leaving and the striker PJ is searching for.

I doubt Jewell is on the ball enough to have people who find out such information.

We have no chance in signing the lad.
shaunminx added 22:36 - Dec 30
We never got him in the summer because our bid was for Sharp AND Coppinger and donny obviously rate Coppinger at more than £450,000.
WickedBlue added 02:45 - Jan 2
Why did we have a bid of £2.3m turned down? Perhaps because that bid was for Sharp and Coppinger therefore it did not trigger the release clause. Don't you people actually read the articles? Or do just read the headlines?
