Jewell: Targets All Youngsters Tuesday, 17th Jan 2012 06:34
Town boss Paul Jewell has revealed that all three of the targets the Blues made bids for over the weekend are young players, with one a teenager.
Jewell refused to be drawn on their precise identities but told the club site: "What I will confirm is that the three players are aged 24 and under.
“While we can't sign every player under 20, we are definitely going to put the emphasis on bringing younger players to the football club.
"I'm on record already in saying that I got the balance wrong in terms of the number of older players we brought in.
"We need experience in the side and in the squad but looking forward and for the long-term future of the club, we will be focusing on younger players. The three players we have made bids for fall into that category, in fact one is a teenager."
We understand that despite the Blues showing interest in Swindon pair Matt Ritchie and Paul Caddis, the duo are not the two players from the same club that Jewell revealed had been targeted over the weekend.
Left-footed right winger Ritchie in particular, however, is a player who has impressed the Blues on their regular visits to the County Ground to monitor the progress of on-loan striker Ronan Murray this season. Talks are ongoing with the Robins regarding the Irish U21 international's future.
Meanwhile, Leicester are reported set to hand a start to Sean St Ledger, whose move to the Blues was halted last week, when they play Nottingham Forest in an FA Cup replay this evening. St Ledger hasn't played for the Foxes since being involved in a bust-up with manager Nigel Pearson after he was left out of their side facing Town on Boxing Day.
Elsewhere, Colchester boss John Ward has dismissed rumours linking the Blues with defender Magnus Okuonghae: “Ipswich have not spoken to me about Magnus."
Ex-Blue Hermann Hreidarsson has completed his move from Portsmouth to Coventry, signing a deal until the end of the season.

Like most supporters I am not happy with Jewells performance as manager this season. However it will be nice to have some stability in terms of a young squad that stays together for at least 2-3 seasons. Something we have lacked for some time now

Good man sign the youngsters up rather than premiership OAPs

stop mentioning billy sharp, he wont come here, he has said time and time again he wont move to another club in a relegation battle Paul Jewell is learning , give him credit where its due. Might be too late though

So it's not McManus or the two lads from swindon? All three of them would have been decent. Where's tge experienced centre back in these three 'young' bids then? God forbid we don't get one in!

Casanova- why couldn't it be sharp if the rumours about Chopra are true? His goals ratio wherever he has played suggest he would get 12-14 goals minimum here by the end of the season, he obviously likes us and we were after him before

The two are from Crewe I think - good prospects IMO plus Kane Ferdinand? But agree - centre backs / right back......

Keaneish - Why isn't it the two lads from Swindon?? One was born in 88 and one was born in 89. You do the maths ;) Billy Sharp is 26.

So, Jewell's plan A didn't work and his Plan B is to do what everyone at the club wanted him to do in the first place, goes to show what an out of touch manager he is really. Some will lap it up and think he is a genius for signing youngsters, others will realise that he should have started off building a team first right from the off in this way.. Ellington on a 2 year contract, jeez...!

Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend etc so could be rubbish but might have some legs - young striker and attacking midfielder. Good lads but potential rather than finished articles. In other words perfect! Still - not defenders! :(

A friend who works in adminstration at Crewe rang me the other day to say there have offers for two of their players from an unknown club. He thinks it could be Ipswich. Let's face it, not many clubs bid for two players from the same club so it narrows things down a bit.

At least Jewell is targetting the right age players now, and it looks as thought the youngsters Cresswell and Emmanuel-Thomas could be very good players for us for years. That would leave Chopra as the only flop that Jewell paid a transfer fee for, so at least he didn't splash £10M+ up the wall like Keane.

Chopra contract ended?!? Bullard leaveing?!? Is this true?

Sitfcblue - because if you read the article, it says it's not either of them! Crewe!? Anyone know of any decent players in the Crewe side? I'd also argue the toss that Chopra is a flop. I'd much rather have him in the squad than not and he could easily have doubled his total do far this season if it wasn't for a bit more luck and some decent saves.

He's like a drunk at the bar saying anything to anyone to get a free drink. Right typt of players but now it's the wrong time. We're in a relagation battle and we need a fully functioning Championship defence, now. He's a personable bloke but one of the thickest managers I've ever seen.
