Bennett on Trial at Doncaster
Bennett on Trial at Doncaster
Wednesday, 8th Aug 2012 14:21

Former Blues full-back Callum Bennett is on trial at Doncaster Rovers. Last season’s U18s captain, who has previously been offered terms by Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, was in action as Rovers lost a pre-season friendly 4-0 at Gainsborough Trinity last night.

Ex-Kesgrave High School pupil Bennett turned down the offer of a one-year contract at Portman Road at the end of last season.

The defender, who can also play in midfield, is also spent time on trial with Borussia Dortmund this summer.

what i cant understand is why if was offered terms by at least three teams including us is he still having trials? is this all about the money? if so it makes sense why he left us (for all those that moaned) as it would appear he is after more than a championship team feels is fit for him? Thats purely a blind view as clearly i have no inside knowledge - just feel most 18 year olds would jump at the chance of a contract with a Championship team?

Not entirely down to him, clubs have to agree compensation with Town or face a tribunal, which is a risk they might not take with a youngster.

Bit of a step down from Borussia Dortmund.

@bluelady I think you'll find Callum has lived in Ipswich his whole life, I would know as I've known him for years, and for him to move away from home and start his career elsewhere is a big first step for him that he and anyone else in his position would want to get right.

Phil, I can confirm the Dortmund trials and at current he is still most likely to join Forest but is trialing at Donny 'on the way' incase he prefers it there.

bluegc .. what were his reasons for leaving us ? Length of contract offered ,Money ?
Because it cant be first team oportunities surely as he will be further down the pecking order at the likes of Forest,Dortmund and Wednesday surely given the amount of players they have been signing and we dont even have a fit right back at all!!

Looks like the grass isnt always greener. Sounds like Weds and Forest offered similar terms to those offered by town.

Sorry son, you want to make it you need to be prepared to graft.

Bluegc.... what would you possibly prefer about Donny over Forest?..... or Ipswich for that matter?!

@Phil yeah sure, will do but I think he's pretty sure on Forest as he's taken all his stuff up there.

@Surco72 I'm not 100% certain at the minute but I can find out.

@Marshalls I honestly don't know, he may see it as a potential back-up as I believe he's pretty sure on Forest but who knows.

I would say with Forest new ownershop and spending power, he would have much less chance of breaking through there.

What is it with youth players these days?? I would have thought you join a club as a kid, work hard learning the game growing up at the club, then as soon as you are te extreme

Is it agents in their ear even at that age??

Offered contract at Dortmund but a big step now considering Sheffield and Nottingham offers ipswich want a big pay off he has never been on trial at Doncaster but it was a favour to let him train as he has missed pre season. NOT money motivated would have been happy to play for the £80 a week he was getting if conditions were right
